I have forgiven the electric guitar, but this has to be over the line! Endorsing an evil SUV?

If Toyota or Dodge or Chevy came to me and offered me $1 million to appear in an ad for an SUV, I would do it in a heart beat. And so would 99% of the rest of you.

Good point.

Maybe Bobby D. has spent a lot of the money he earned in the 60's and 70's, and he needs to replenish the vault.

And there's a very good chance that some of your favorite Beatles songs were inspired by Dylan.

physically and wrote together, but they pushed each other in a hundred different directions.

I love Dylan. I'm gonna go see him the 26th with Elvis Costello.

I saw them a few weeks ago in Bridgeport, CT. Make sure you get there on time, because Amos Lee, the opening act, is very good... and Elvis is of course great. Dylan and his band were superb when I saw them, which was amazing, as it was their 4th show in four nights, up and down the East Coast!

Edwards drives a Ford Escape Hybrid, and continues to own older 1994 GMC truck and 2004 Chrysler Pacifica. Meanwhile, Hillary is driven around in heavily armored Secret Service Vehicles that get less than 10 mpg, and Obama drives a Chrysler 300C, a full-size sport-luxury sedan.

So tell us, how your chosen candidate is doing so much more for the environment than Edwards. And are you still attacking Edwards for being right on the environment?

I drive an Explorer. The only car we own. I fill up about every other week. I'll bet most DUers with small cars burn more gas in that time than I do. I drive to the bus that I commute to work on. That's the bulk of my driving.

Again as I have said over and over to no avail, it is not the size of your vehicle it is that amount of gas you burn that makes you a responsible or not a responsible human being!

20. After 45 years, you would think you would understand Dylan by now
He has never "sold out" because his entire career has been one, long, brilliant act of artiface.

He wrote folk songs because folk songs were popular at the time and he could write them brilliantly. He latched onto some incredibly influential folkies, used them, and moved on.

He went into rock and roll, because rock and roll suddenly started to get interesting and he could write brilliant rock and roll songs.

Rock and roll became too dangerous for him so he dropped out, dried out, and became a country singer.

He putzed around for a few years until he needed money and became a stadium rocker.

Honest to goodness, I have no idea what the Christian faze was.

Dylan has been in business for two reasons:
1. He loves to write, record, and perform music. There is no denying that.
2. He wants to make money.

Saving the world is somewhere around 250 on his list, I think.

26. Stupid move on his part. To rebellious teens he will be "the guy on the stupid commercials."
He could always count on new generations finding and identifying with his old songs- now many would-be teenage Dylan fans will see him as "the guy on the TV commercials" before even giving his old stuff a chance...

If he keeps this kind of thing up, it's best way for him to lose his credibility with future generations of music fans...

34. Nice try, but you missed some important angles.
Your criticism is very superficial, IMO. You assume to know his motives, and you oversimplify his career.

Examples: "He wrote folk songs because folk songs were popular at the time and he could write them brilliantly. He latched onto some incredibly influential folkies, used them, and moved on."

Which folkies did he "use"? Woody Guthrie? You could make a case, but I could make a better case, IMO, that Dylan simply loved the way Woody wrote songs and lived his life. (Dylan, as a kid actually was a lot like like Woody... traveling here and there, working, etc.) All the other popular folkies of the early sixties were amateurs compared to Dylan. He outwrote them and out performed them. Listen to some of his early stuff and then show me anyone who was nearly as good, in total. No one could write, sing, and accompany himself on harmonica and guitar as well as he did. You accuse him of "using" the folk style, but think about how much time and effort he had to put in to be able to play that way. He was still a teenager at the time, by the way.

Woody Guthrie was one of his influences, but my guess is that people like Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry were actually stronger influences. So your assessment of his folk period, while consistent with other superficial assessments, is incorrect.

"Rock and roll became too dangerous for him so he dropped out, dried out, and became a country singer."

You're way off here. You imply that he used rock and roll for some brief period, but he has always been a rock and roller. He was actually into rock and roll very strongly as a kid. The Martin guitar and harmonicas he played in the early sixties were obtained by selling his electric guitar and amp. When he "moved on" he was actually going back to the music he preferred. His first electric, rock and roll album was entitled "Bringing It All Back Home" and he composed the album cover with visuals that were a direct response to the criticisms he was receiving from the folk community for "deserting" them.

The post motorcycle accident albums included some country (Nashville Skyline) but also some R&R/roots stuff (John Wesley Harding and Planet Waves) that was really good, so "became a country singer" is an oversimplification. I will agree that several other albums from the early seventies were garbage, possibly deliberately made garbage by Dylan.

Yes, eventually he stopped using drugs, probably as an act of self preservation. I'm glad he survived, and I sure wish a lot of others did as well (Janis, Jimi, Jim, etc. etc.)

"He putzed around for a few years until he needed money and became a stadium rocker."

Yeah, he put out some garbage in the early seventies, but Blood on The Tracks and Desire are great albums. If the "stadium rocker" comment is addressing Rolling Thunder Review, I'll take a stadium rocker any day. Those were some great shows... really intense rock and roll.

I don't know what the Christian period was about, either, but he actually did some really good gospel stuff.

You did not address anything he's done recently. If that's because you are not aware of it, you are missing some great stuff. His last three albums are outstanding.

But my biggest problem with your description of his career, is that you pay attention only to the style of music, and not at all to his lyrics, the content. That's really what separates him from everyone else, IMO.

Oh and I agree.... saving the world is not his agenda. He's too much of a realist for that.

I own something like 30 Dylan albums. I've seen him live about ten times. I read his book. I read books by others about him. I know the man's story. You didn't need to enlighten me with nuance.

My larger point is that he has always done precisely what he wanted and most of his motivations over the years have been largely selfish. I still think Joan Baez is completely confused by his behavior towards her. Her performance in that Scorsese documentary is remarkable.

I loved when Joan Baez IMITATED Dylan in that film, she Nailed him too!

In light of new info on the pollution that's created by the making of the new IPods, made of the same material as the IPhones, one could say that U2 sold out to Apple as well, except they already DID , a long time ago...

56. You may know his history, but your initial post ....
was either deliberately biased to overstate his selfishness or could have been worded more accurately. (By the way, I think the word you may have meant to use in that first post was artifice, not artiface.)

My intent was not to enlighten you with nuance. I was providing some facts and background to dispute your statements. And I stand by my post. If you have specific disagreements with anything I said, I am all ears.

I do agree with your "larger point", at least in part. But I also think he does not go out of his way at all (as almost every other artist does) to garner himself good PR for his charity. Which is why very little is known about it. I just can't accept that a man who writes the way he does is as selfish as you seem to think he is.

But as this thread demonstrates very well, it does not take much for people who really know little about him to attack him.

84. Well, he had a drug habit, a messy divorce, and a stalled career for 15 years
And he never exactly sold a lot of records. The first two greatest hits and Blood on the Tracks were the only records to ever go multi-platinum.

He is probably well off compared to the rest of the world. But he is certainly not Paul McCartney.

93. Your data's out of date.
Desire and Blonde on Blonde are also multi platinum, as of 1999 and 2003, respectively.

http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?table=SEARCH_RESULTS

Highway 61 has to be close, IMO.

But you're right about the comparison with McCartney. Dylan's album sales relative to the Beatles are miniscule.

http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?table=tblArtTal

The Stones blow Dylan away as well, and there is a shocking number of lesser talents (far lesser talents) with as much or more in album sales. (Reba McIntyre? Alabama? WTF?) But it's comforting to see that Elvis blows everyone else away.

I would love to believe that I will always be a liberal democrat, but I've seen far too many people switch to the republican party once they have a little bit of that mean green. IMO, there's no more arrogant souls than SOME of those who are in the upper middle class scratching their way toward that big brass ring.

But these sell out celebrities are a hoot! I was floored when Jamie Lee Curtis endorsed "The Gropinator." Closer to topic, I went into a classic rock funk when Led Zeppelin advertised for Cadillac. :wow: OMG! Who'd of thunk it when us teens were waiting up till Midnight on Saturday for the Bob Kirchner's Rock Hour?!? I felt so empowered - like I was part of a social movement, and sneaky by not telling my parents that I was listening to "the subversive music" (according to them).

Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan were an important part of Rock's and Folk Music's 1960s-1070s COUNTERCULTURE ... and it was damn beautiful - with or without altering one's consciousness. :hippie:

It's all gone ... as our INFO-tainment M$M glibly shows "Pissing in the Wind" Quality Reality Shows and proclaims them ALL f**king artwork. :nuke:

No, with or without folk icons like Dylan, I will not blindly obey nor lay down.

What's good is bad, what's bad is good
You'll find out when you reach the top
YOU'RE ON THE BOTTOM.

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats
Blowing through the letters that we wrote
Idiot wind, plowing through the dust upon our shelves
We're idiots babe
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves. :(

Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. And I'm pretty sure it aired on Friday, taking the time slot of The Dick Cavett Show.

(An aside on Dylan: His current manager is an old friend of mine. Behind the scenes, they do a lot more for liberal causes than any other 20 people I know. But as far as Bob's career goes - to quote his manager - 'Yes, it is about the money.')

Edited for spelling. Today's the last day of my vacation, and I'm enjoying a few Old Brown Dog Ales.

memory of a young teenager of right wing libertarian type parents. I made it my *mission* to buy and play all the counterculture music I could get my hands on. While other young girls were listening to Donnie Osmond, I was rocking out to Alice Cooper.

Alas, ole' Alice is in it for himself too. Excuse me while my head explodes? ;)

I wish that Our American Culture can CHOOSE to value "compassion and humanity" half as much as we honor those who hold power and money.

After all, we can't take it with us and "Our Position, Power and Money" won't figure into Saint Peter's evaluation one whit.

p.s. I'm not enjoying any adult beverages now since I have a martial arts class to attend soon. However, please accept my humble regrets for "jumping to conclusions." I'm just saddened that all my idealism as a young teen/adult has disappeared. Dylan is a great artist, no argument there. :hi:

45. I loved that show, even though ol' Don was one of the most boring TV hosts ever.
And the funny thing was, he let his kids host the last season - and they sounded just like him! :)

Before it became 'Don Kirshner's Rock Concert,' it was known as 'In Concert,' and it introduced me to a lot of bands that I never would have heard otherwise - like the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Here's the footage from 'In Concert' of SAHB - http://youtube.com/watch?v=rg9FcXmwnYo

For a kid sitting outside of Philly, glued to his TV, that was absolutely scary. I dug every second of it.

69. I take it you never saw "Where the Buffalo Roam?"
Even Rolling Stone called him a "greedhead" for selling his stories to the producers of that piece of garbage. (Though, to be honest, I still love Murray's performance in that. In fact, a better movie would have been just to let Murray improvise as Thompson for an hour and a half in different scenarios).

I don't think Thompson ever "sold out" per se. But from about 1979 forward he took a lot of paychecks from a lot of people for a lot of crappy work.

From the article:
"I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq War more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," said Robb Willer, a sociology doctoral candidate at Cornell. Willer is presenting his findings Aug. 15 at the American Sociological Association's 100th annual meeting in Philadelphia

101. I came damn near close to getting myself arrested for rescuing a puppy
from a white Escalade in 90 degree weather. The pup was in heat distress and we revived him in the shade with a big gulp. A pretty petite blonde showed up and censored me for "breaking into her car." Well, someone else reached in and unlocked the door and I took the 8 week black lab pup out of the kennel, i.e., heaven forbid a puppy mar those lovely leather seats.

When the cops showed up 15 minutes later, the pup had recovered somewhat and "the blonde in the Escalade" was livid at me.

OMG! No good deed goes unpunished. I didn't get arrested but I received the third degree with a license check. I told the cop as he "permitted me" to leave, "Next time I'll just pass by so you can discover a dead puppy instead." :grr:

Fuck Cadillac Escalades! The vast majority of people driving them are always traveling ALONE. Because of this horrific experience, I'll always consider the following sales pitch.

Cadillac Escalade. The Luxury SUV for The Total ASSHOLE!

Sorry, but I'm still a little peeved.

103. Money corrupts...
Money corrupts everything. Everyone has a price as they say. And for the right price, everything else goes out the window. I am not sure about the gas mileage of an Escalade. It may be economical in that sense. But I am sure it is not economical in the other sense and is not the SUV of choice of the average American. Not because they don't want one. They simply can't afford one.

But when was Bob Dylan the average American? And didn't Abbie Hoffman become a stockbroker?
