But the comment and act refer to decades past.
I'm old enough to remember when any degree held by a black was considered a gift, not representative of his intellect and achievements, but of the admissions policy of a university and their desire to avoid being seen as racist. So any degree by a minority was worthless.
I still see it from time to time, and not just at DU. If a black academician is competent or gifted, he earned his degree. Where I was visiting for a while a black lecturer came, big reputation from a school with a big reputation, and he was a dolt. The consensus from the entirely progressive crowd during the reception was "affirmative action admit to grad school, affirmative action hire, too bad, maybe the department can preserve its reputation somehow." The point is, nobody assumed he was having a bad day, foolishly that the group of psycholinguists would find rehashed insights from 50 years ago enlightening, or forget his lecture in his office. "Affirmative action hire" explained it all in about as insulting a way as possible, by absolving him of any responsibility for where he was or what he did.
Personally, I think he wasn't as stupid as he was letting on. He was talking down to us; nobody could be that stupid. Then again, when challenged by recent research he had that look of a deercaught in headlights, so you never know.
