Listening to some of the calls in to Washington Journal regarding the Job protection legislation for gays is pretty disturbing.

You can just hear the sheer vehemence in these calls.

4. Looking forward to the day when an openly gay person
can make a serious run for the WH. The homophobia is deep, mainly because so many people are taught from such a young age that it is a sin. That is a sin.

5. never happen
not when every political ad will be scenes from a San Francisco gay pride parade or something like that. there really are people out there who think they dont know ANY gay people. They would have a hard time believeing there are gay doctors, teachers, lawyers, police officers, politicians, firemen etc. And not just in the Village People. I hear people make comments about gays every day and I work in (liberal) Boston! When people find out I am gay they find it worrisome that a professional man with a kid does not fit their stereotype of the "gay man"

9. Fortunately, it's not the whole country
and attitudes are changing. And I'll just bet those people you're referring to, don't just hate gay people.

10. You must keep in mind the people calling the Washington Journal
on the Republican line haven't gotten their daily meds yet. They quiet down after Nurse Ratchit leaves.

11. just remember when you hear this from Repubs
that, offensive as it is, from a demographic and electoral standpoint, it
should be music to our ears. They are following the path
to political extinction, as the attitudes of our young people
are clearly moving in the opposite direction.

13. Yeah, sure...that's what we thought in the late 60's/early 70's, too
Surprise, surprise! The country chose vile superstition and deliberate ignorance over progress, enlightenment, and inclusion. It's just so much FUN to despise and poke fun at people who are different.

14. Not just the country
But a good portion of DU. Just look at what happens every election time and whenever any gay/homophobia related event happens. It's sickening. :puke:

17. This country has a pathological hate complex about everybody.
Anyone who's different than you in any way, who has something you don't, whose poor life circumstances make you confront the fact that you could be next, the list of people we feel justified in hating is pretty endless.

Sadly, it's even spilling over into DU.

18. The country's collective nerves have been scraped raw...
...so a lot of these things that people were able to keep hidden are starting to really manifest themselves far more openly now. It's not just on this issue. We're an angry and tense country at the moment, and in such instances people tend to let their guard down and reveal that inner self more readily.
