Rosacea is not CAUSED by alcohol abuse.

Rosacea - Topic Overview

What is rosacea?

Rosacea (say “roh-ZAY-sha”) is a skin disease that causes redness and pimples on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. The redness may come and go. People sometimes call rosacea "adult acne" because it can cause outbreaks that look like acne. It can also cause burning and soreness in the eyes and eyelids.

Rosacea can be embarrassing, and left untreated, it can get worse. If the symptoms bother you, see your doctor and learn ways to control rosacea.

What causes rosacea?

Experts are not sure what causes rosacea. It tends to affect people who have fair skin or blush easily, and it seems to run in families.

Rosacea is not caused by alcohol abuse, as people once thought. But in people who have rosacea, drinking alcohol may cause symptoms to get worse (flare).

Rosacea often flares when something causes the blood vessels in the face to expand, which causes redness. Things that cause a flare-up are called triggers. Common triggers are exercise, sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths. Swings in temperature from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause a flare of rosacea.

What are the symptoms?

People with rosacea may have:
• A flushed face and pimples or bumps on or around the cheeks, nose, mouth, and forehead. Sometimes the flushing or redness can last for days.
• Tiny red veins on the face that look like spiderwebs.
• Burning or stinging facial skin, especially when they apply lotions or medicines. The face may feel increasingly dry, sensitive, or sunburned.
• Dry, red, irritated eyes. The eyelids may look red and swollen, and vision may be blurry. If it is not treated, rosacea can cause serious eye problems.

2. There was a report in the LATimes a few months ago...
that suggested that rosacea is caused by an auto-immune response of some component of the skin that usually prevents skin inflammation turning on the skin and causing inflammation instead.
Mine was brought on by stress.

3. My sister just had laser treatments for rosacea...
I have the kind of sister who makes you look bad by having no bad habits. Anyway, she doesn't drink, or smoke, or gamble, or over-eat, or.........
Anyway, she's been plagued by rosacea most of her life, and finally decided to have laser treatments for it. The treatments aren't covered by medical insurance and they're expensive, but WOW! She not only got rid of her rosacea, she looks ten years younger--her skin in beautiful. Now if I can get her to eat more donuts....

4. I have it. Alcohol can tirgger a flare. So can stess, heat and spicy foods.
I do the laser treatments and it really helps.
So does a simple antibiotic pill everyday.

It can also make your eyes really sore if it flares.

6. Lately it's been with my period too
Last month my nose turned huge and red like a clown nose. :P

I've never had it so bad I had to be treated for it, but I'm changing my mind about that. I might have to go to the spa.

8. Another rosacea sufferer here
I do drink alcohol on occasion and boy, when I do, you can tell immediately - it goes directly to my face, as my mom used to say (I couldn't drink underaged even if I'd wanted to because it would have shown immediately). I'm on a prophylactic daily dose of tetracycline and it has been the only thing that worked. None of the topically applied medicines touched it.

9. Raccoon has a good point, but...
Would it be unfair to suggest that a rosacea flareup is a red flag, given Bush's history of alcoholism?

Let me go through a few things.

History of alcoholism: Red flag.
Seen drinking near-beer, given the history of alcoholism: Red flag.
Slurred speech, with grammatical errors, malapropisms and neologisms: Red flag.
Exercising extremely poor judgment in his duties as President: Red flag.
And now, Rosacea flare-up in light of history of alcholism: Red flag.

Quite a few red flags.

10. In his case, yes.

Bush definitely has a history of alcoholism, and he may have rosacea too. Looks like he does.

However, it used to be, and still is to some extent, that many people thought if someone has rosacea, s/he is alcoholic. Given that there is still a stigma attached to alcoholism, I wanted to post that the alcoholism doesn't cause it, but exacerbates it.

11. That's fair.
My mom has a mild case of rosacea, and she's not alcoholic or anything like that.
