Poll question: How many DUers are homeowners vs. renters?
Since a noter claimed that less than 15% of DUers owned homes, it made me wonder what the real number might be.

What say you?

16. I should "own" my home in 8 years...
About the time my son graduates high school and heads on to college.

But I tell you, it's been like a marathon run: start out strong and refreshed, hit some head winds and potholes over the years, and now panting and wobbling all the way to the finish line...

Extra income. And the McMansions with massive mortgages, property taxes and $750 a month in utility bills feel superior. I just shake my head.

But it will be a manufactured home, so I will still pay lot rent. Then I plan to buy some land up in the mountains and move the house there for my retirement, as I'm paying cash for the house and will have no house mortgage.

is in the offing....90% of tenants are on SS, little or no savings, that's why they moved here. Many meetings, possible litigation to look forward to. Insurance since the hurricane two years ago..our question, we are not owners, will we share in profits if the building is sold...Blech...

18. Your poll won't reveal any better data than that claim.
That poster actually suggested that 25% of DUers owned homes when one included those with mortgages. The poster may be right about 15% owning their homes outright, but the rate of HO with mortgage here probably is similar to the national average, or perhaps a bit lower because of the high number of younger DUers and people living in high cost urban areas -- I'd guess the rate is about 60%. That would include people who own all ranges of permanent housing from trailers to houseboats to condos to houses.

27. no surprise -- home ownership is over 68 percent in the US
The suggestion that only 15 percent of DUers were home owners reflected that poster's own ignorance and irrelevance more than anything.

30. own-free and clear
It's a junky little house built in 1952 that I am perpetually "remodeling" (I use that term loosley with my carpentry skills), but it and the 2/3 acre it sits on belong to my wife and I. Nobody's going to kick us off of it. :bounce:

I'm between jobs, and I'm staying with friends right now.

I don't pay them rent.

I'm not a squatter.

I'm not a renter.

And I don't own a home.

I'll probably never ever own a home.

Thanks, George Bush.

37. Rent. Always have, probably always will
I am one of those people who will never make enough money to buy. People like me are being priced out of the housing market, at least here by out-of-towners looking for cheap second homes. And they are cheap compared to the places they come from (Austin probably). But they raise property values so much that even people who formerly were able to afford their homes now have to sell. Well, when the next Katrina comes they'll be living in apartments too I guess.

38. I don't have a mortgage anymore, but the government owns my home.
If you don't believe that the government owns your home as well, then don't pay the rent (property taxes.) Miss a few rent payments and they will send out some armed guys to throw you off the property and then sell it to somebody else. If you forcefully resist they will kill you. If you truly owned the property that couldn't happen.

Regard, Mugu

49. i don't consider that rent, I consider my taxes as my share of the infrastructure
of my community.

I like my roads being paved, having firemen and police available, drinking water to my faucet, schools for the kids, etc etc etc.

I don't mind paying my share.

39. I rent at the present time, but had been a homeowner for
about 16 years prior to this last year. It was more of a case of a changing personal situation along with a potentially changing job scenario that made me think that renting was a better option for a period of time. I have the financial resources to buy a place once I feel a bit more settled about things in my life...
