Satellite photo/maps with fire areas indicated (dialup warning, 500kb)
Here are two satellite photos which I have added annotations to. The first one is a satellite photo of San Diego County, and the areas overlaid in red are the approximate perimeters of the two largest fires currently burning (Witch Creek and Harris fires). These perimeters are approximate, and are still changing at this hour. In fact, as I am typing this they are saying on the TV that 25 homes in Rancho Santa Fe have burned.

Also indicated is the area burned in the Cedar Fire of October 2003, and the location of Blackwater's proposed new "Blackwater West" site (bottom right of image).

The second photo was taken Monday morning and shows the smoke from all the southern California fires being blown out to sea.

1. I have family in Alpine ... and wonder about the "Descanso Fire" east of there.
Is it out?

3. I think Alpine is not threatened, but
Harbison Canyon and Crest, which are west of Alpine, were evacuated yesterday. I don't know why those areas were evacuated because there is no fire close to them. I guess they are worried that the Harris fire could turn north, but so far it is just moving west. I don't think there is any active fire anywhere close to Alpine. There was a small fire in Descanso, but I can't find any information on it right now, so it must be under control. You might keep checking this web site:

8. i think they didn't want to take any chances..
there's only one way out of Crest, unless they open the gate to the back grade, and getting out of Harbo is no picnic either.

10. Well, they used to live near Harbison Canyon but now live near Palo Verde Lake

It's a pretty "tony" subdivision they moved to about 8-10 years ago.

Since it's southeast of Alpine - in the direction of Descanso - and adjacent to "open space" lands, I've been just a tad concerned.

14. The Descanso fire is 400 acres and is expected to be contained sometime today.
So it doesn't seem like any part of Alpine is threatened.

 We've become estranged (family and political issues) but that doesn't mean I don't care about them.

2. I live under the "g" in Los Angeles...
Check out the smoke I was breathing whilst trying to sleep... trying being the operative word here. I have a sister just south of the Santiago fire, and a brother and sister at Lake Arrowhead who have evacuated and have no idea if their homes are still there.

Thanks for posting these. They will help me explain to friends and family across the states.

18. Weather from KUSI
Conditions Today
Dry, Gusty, Santa Ana winds will slowly end today as high pressure moves to the east. An on-shore flow will slowly return during the evening and early Wednesday morning which should help reduce the wildfire danger.
