Half a million people have been evacuated
we have issues with power and water

So for those who continue to gloat, damn it, didn't know we had that many rich folks in this county...

1. Where are you Nadinbrzezinski?
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 03:36 PM by BeHereNow
I flew into LAX last night and it was incredible.
Smoke everywhere- could see some of the fires from the plane
as we landed.
I'm in Burbank and the sky has that orangish cast to it
here which makes me wonder what's burning around here-
best map I could find showed one up near the 118 and
170.
It's like hell on earth with the overcast and very hot here.
Stay safe.

4. It was depressing actually.

Felt like we we descending into hell.

It's really hot outside and the sky is sort of dim-
from the smoke. Everything has a faint orange glow.

When I went outside I thought there must be another
fire in the Hollywood hills nearby.
I haven't found any reports, but the sky looks
the way it did when we had the big one a few months ago.

Guess it is just a build up of the previous days surrounding us.

3. San Diego coastal
and the smoke is lots of fun, NOT

One thing I will say.. the disaster plan insofar as evacuations... has worked

Otherwise I fear we would have scores killed already

5. Glad to hear the evacuations were well planned.
I'm sure you are right, the fatalities might have been much higher.
Stay inside. The air here is pretty grim today, so I can imagine
what it's like there. No fires that close, so I guess
the smoke is traveling down from one norht of us.
Keep the windows closed and stay in touch.

7. I just learned that some family members near Poway had to evacuate.
I am just so appalled, dismayed and terribly sorry this is happening. Relatives who now are near me lived in SD during the 2003 fires, had it come within a mile of their place, and have lots of friends still in SD. I wish you more than well, and am keeping good thoughts for you and everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.

Blessings!

8. Latest - 1,300 structures burned, 512,000 people evacuated - very poor air quality
Most schools closed for the week. Some evacuation sites still welcoming donations - I just dropped off sleeping bags, lip balm, tissues, gum, water, socks (I tried to think of what I would need). Wind is supposed to change to on-shore tomorrow. When it blows off the ocean, we get the moisture in the air. Right now it is blowing off the desert, and is dry, dry, dry.

The place is still burning.

Take care

11. The good news is there are 37,300,000 other Californians to help them.
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 04:15 PM by jody
Louisiana has 4,500,000 people and Greater New Orleans had 1.4 million before Katrina.

12. I am wondering
My son's band is flying there tomorrow to play Arka Fest.

This is held at Pico Rivera, Whittier?

I really am worried about them flying in but also is this area safe? It's a rodeo arena and I also wondered if any large animals were being held there but did a quick search and no info. I'm pretty clueless about CA so maybe some of you there can help.

Worried parent :scared:
