The people who were burned out, will have the other shoe drop now
Even if they were insured for "replacement" value, there have been significant and subtle changes made to their policies over the years. Most people just file it away, and think they are fully covered.

People forget about how much STUFF they have in their houses, and unless you can PROVE you had it, the insurance companies will probably give you NOTHING for a lot of the stuff you own(ed)..

That couch that cost you $1k? they will depreciate the hell out of it, IF you can even prove you HAD it..

Unless you have special coverage, those burned up jewelery boxes are worth as much as the ashes they are now..

Your wardrobe? thrift shop pricing.. got receipts?

Unless you pay a TON for a policy and photograph everything you own, staple the receipt to the photo and then put in in a bank safety deposit box, you're probably S.O.L. on most of your stuff..

Insurance is one of those dirty little secret things.. Gotta have it, but you only find out if all that money you paid, was worth it... when you are reduced to NOTHING and are at your most vulnerable.. and then it's too late to DO anything about it..

3. they get away with it time after time, because they know they can
people who have lost everything will have a hard time suing to get their due, and the insurance companies know this..:grr:

4. I watch some co-workers go through this after the Cedar fire
Getting the house replaced is a cruise compared to getting the money for your stuff. And all the time you are renting another place, dealing with the insurance company, architects, building contractors and getting the basics back together, you still have to be paying your mortgage, taxes and insurance.

6. My experience with insurance claims
is quite different then what you imply. Several years ago, we had a bad ice storm in NC. I lost 17 trees with 5 on the house causing about $10,000 in damage. The adjuster and the insurance company were great and covered more then I thought they would. Like spoiled food in the fridge. And, my premiums never increased. Tell me your experience with claims made for damage to your house.

7. Positive anecdotes on a hated industry will not be tolerated.
You should be ashamed of yourself for allowing your ducks to be in such a row.

The few DU'rs that diligently work in the insurance industry and have cared about their clients have been taken out back and shot.

:sarcasm: <---for the sarcasm impaired

8. LOL and thanks
for your post. I hate blanket comments and stereotyping and just had to share my positive experience. My adjuster was great.

9. We've had homeowners insurance since 1977 and have filed only ONE claim
It was handled well and we were treated fairly, but that was waaaay back in the 80's.. Insurance companies have changed a lot since then:scared: The stories we hear about insurance are usually not all that rosy anymore

10. Then you should call your agent and make sure your policy is appropriate...
and up to date as far as riders, etc are concerned.

BTW, i am NOT an insurance agent.

I'm just trying to do my best to keep thinking logically and positively.

12. There you go!
I hope you never have a need to make another claim.

I also trust that when and if you do, your diligence will pay off in a speedy and full claim payment.
