1. Thanks again.
My friend near Qualcomm seems much less worried now, though the smoke continues to thicken.

2. Schadenfreude if the new BW property
goes up in flames. That's one property I would be OK if it burnt to a crisp and would be unusable (at least for a while) by Blackwater, if it's all open field.

Seriously, stay safe you guys. :grouphug:

4. Interesting that the border is such a fire barrier
when it's so porous when it comes to people

To think, Tecate, Mexico came out totally unscathed by the Harris fire

5. The Harris fire did cross into Mexico. The map I used didn't show anything in Mexico.
I heard on Monday that the Harris fire did cross the border, and that the border crossing at Tecate is closed. I have not seen any maps or have heard any information as to how far it spread into Mexico. That area is rugged and hilly and sparsely populated (if at all) so there will probably very little effort to fight the fires in that area. The efforts on this side of the border are concentrated on the areas where there are the most houses, currently they are focusing on Jamul.

6. It's just sad that the mapmaker doesn't think more globally
it's as if the folks south of the line don't matter

this is the age of the internet

and i'm sure folks down there would like to see also

I know I'm being picky
but it seems to make a statement by omission

14. Wow, what a wonderful talent you have.
I practice a sort of neodruidism as a philosophy of life and the cathedral front in the forest just makes me smile.

I see now it is three pics but my mind was seeing it as one. Would you mind if I used them as wallpaper on my computer? My cathedral is the forest.:)

8. Is this why Leno is off.
I don't care for him too much but damn it I love his "Headlines" on Mondays. That's the only night I watch. And Stewart is off this week. Wouldn't you love his job he must be trying to set a record for vacation time with bush.

or man made?

17. Chaparral vegetation is designed by nature to burn an average of once every 6 years.
Before the land was developed, small fires kept the chaparral in check before it grew too big. Typically one area would burn an average of once every 6 years, started by lightning. With development and fire suppression, native vegetation has grown much larger, so when a fire inevitably comes along, the fuel volume is much larger. Most of these types of plants have high oil content in their leaves (such as native sages, etc.) making them highly flammable. When the "Santa Ana" conditions prevail, the air is extremely dry and hot, and winds blow from east to west, fanning the flames and making a fire virtually unstoppable. On top of all this, we have had only half of our normal rainfall this year, leaving the vegetation extremely low in water content. All of these factors came together this week to produce an explosive situation.

When I got a good look, I called my friend who lives very near the western fire border of Rancho Santa Fe. She evacuated Monday night when the early evening pinky glow on the horizon turned bright red-orange.

She said the mayor of TJ sent firetrucks to San Diego today. I'm surprised they let them cross the border.
