Our children are not lost
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 05:04 AM by BanzaiBonnie

teachers are wonderful people.

My grandson is coming home very excited about what he's learning about the Constitution. He's in 7th grade this year. He's studying each amendment and what they mean.

He keeps popping up with comments wherever applicable. He'll say something like, "that's covered in the 1st amendment". And then he and I discuss what it's all about :bounce:

Parent teacher conferences are this week and and I'm not his parent, but I'm going to make a little visit to commend the teacher for getting my grand so excited over the Constitution.

Edited to add that teachers are wonderful people. THERE, I said it again!

1. IF the children are NOT in America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline.
Children Defense Fund

This CDF report documents America's Cradle to Prison Pipeline, an urgent national crisis at the intersection of poverty and race that puts Black boys at a one in three lifetime risk of going to jail, and Latino boys at a one in six lifetime risk of the same fate. Tens of thousands of children and teens are sucked into the Pipeline each year.

2. I agree.
I have long thought that school teachers (and other school employees) were being asked to take on more responsibilities with regard to family-communitiy issues. In the past 20 years, however, there have been positive advances in coordinating efforts with social/human service agencies. That's not to say everything is perfect -- there are too many children being put on medications that they should not be taking, but that's an issue for a different discussion.

When I talk to the youngsters who are in my children's classes, I am impressed. I feel good about the future. And in the last two weeks, I've had the chance to go to a couple "open houses" and meet with a lot of the school teachers. It is a relatively small, rural upstate NY school system, and it has some of the most outstanding individuals working with children that I have met.

Schools are one of the single most important building blocks of our democracy's foundation. The more that community members become involved in their local school systems -- including being on the school board and parent-teacher organizations -- the better the school can prepare the younger generation for tomorrow.

3. my children know way more than i did as a kid. the schools
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 06:41 AM by seabeyond
teach more than when i was a kid. i have listened to the blame go to teachers and schools and have looked hard at the pointing of finger on teachers and i cannot accept it being teachers and our school. my kids are 7th and 4th. there was one lazy 2nd grade teacher in my oldest sons academic life and other than that all the teachers have been kick ass.

i do hate the blame is automatically given to teachers. i squarely put it on the parents shoulder. i see the difference from the parent that raises their kid and the parent the advocated that role to the teachers, schools, govt and any other authority. i hate that so many parents have decided it is the schools role to go beyond the abc's and 123's to every social, moral and every other issue that is the parents to teach their children.

but what my kids know at their age is not even comparable to the information my generation had available.

I agree with you, tired of the media making them out to be stupid. Yes we have some great teachers as well as a lot of great parents!
