6. He said...
He said that the Democratic/Pelosi strategy will be to slowly defund the war. He said what will be different from Vietnam is that
the defunding will occur while the Democrats publicly profess supporting the troops while cutting their funding behind the scenes. He said the only thing that will be different is that back in Vietnam Kerry openly called the 'our troops' baby killers, while now the Democrats will profess they support the troops, but not the mission.

What a disgrace.

12. Hi, kirby!
Welcome to DU! :hi:

What a hateful piece of work that guy is, hey? I was napping and woke up just in time to catch the last of his floor rant -
lucky me. :sarcasm:

If anyone has the stomach for it, the speech is here (typos "That is why we elect President’s" and all):

14. Here is the quote
Thanks for the Welcome and thanks for the link to his speech. Here is the excerpt I was paraphrasing:

"The only difference between what the Democrats will soon attempt to do and what they did in the late 60’s and early 70’s is they will continue to say publicly they support the troops, instead of speaking, as Senator Kerry did in front of a congressional committee, of the atrocities of the so-called “baby-killers.” The poisonous atmosphere of those times resulted in the military prohibiting all military personnel in the Metropolitan Washington area from wearing their uniforms in public out of safety concerns. "

17. 'what the Democrats will soon attempt to do"?
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 05:25 PM by NI4NI
It always amazes me how after not doing anything right, or anything at all in the past, a Reputz minority member like Miller knows just what the Dems are going to do in the future.

20. And it is better to ignore the killing of the young and the raping of the women and the torture?
Better to ignore it, to not speak of it? That tells me where this person's priorities are. Welcome to DU kirby.

15. baby killers in Iraq
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 05:03 PM by ngant17
Maybe the honorable rep. from Florida would prefer to ignore the rapes and murders of young girls in Iraq? Turning out serial killers in army uniforms to run amok in Iraq, that seems to be the current hiring trend in the Pentagon these days.

18. Kirby,
Did he back up his "baby killers" statement with real facts? I don't ever remember Kerry calling the Vietnam troops "baby killers" while he was protesting the war. I've heard it used by people during that awful time, yes, but never by Kerry.

19. Here is what Kerry testified in 1971
Excerpt from John Kerrys testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. No references to 'baby-killers'. He was relaying actual testimony of soldiers.

"I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command....

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

We call this investigation the "Winter Soldier Investigation." The term "Winter Soldier" is a play on words of Thomas Paine in 1776 when he spoke of the Sunshine Patriot and summertime soldiers who deserted at Valley Forge because the going was rough.

We who have come here to Washington have come here because we f eel we have to be winter soldiers now. We could come back to this country; we could be quiet; we could hold our silence; we could not tell what went on in Vietnam, but we feel because of what threatens this country, the fact that the crimes threaten it, not reds, and not redcoats but the crimes which we are committing that threaten it, that we have to speak out."

Miller is desperate to take this vitriol to the House floor.
