WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush says he has signed a major disaster declaration for California in the wake of a series of wildfires, evacuations and devastating property losses.

President George W Bush declared southern California a federal disaster zone as the worst wildfires in the state's history destroyed more than 1,000 homes.
