Fire map: Palomar Observatory, Julian, Blackwater site all threatened; Camp Pendleton fire
21,000 avocado trees have been lost. Red areas are active fires, orange areas have already burned, purple areas are still evacuated, green areas are where evacuations have been lifted. Blackwater's proposed site near Potrero may still be threatened by the Harris fire.

2. It's a combination of 3 photos I took in the last couple of weeks,
the outer two taken in the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area in eastern San Diego county and the middle one in the Immaculata church on the University of San Diego campus.

5. Go to this web site:
http://sdcountyemergency.com/

Under "News Releases" on the right side, look for the first one in the scrolling list with "Countywide Fire Map Perimeter" in the title. The first one you come to will be the most recent one. Click on that, and it will send you to a PDF file which you can download to your disk and then view with any program that can show PDF files, and you can zoom in on it. What I posted here was just a reduced version of it which I added some names to.

7. Thanks for this update!
I know that this whole thing has been a nightmare for the people out in San Diego. And from early reports, http://dist39.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC=%7BDEC79563-71F6-4C5F-8EDC-03BC94466473%7D&DE=%7B4511738B-98F7-414A-A503-791EC2A8EA55%7D">it looks like foot-dragging by the government played a part in this -- just like Katrina. I guess we'll see.

Oh, and I like that sig line photo of yours too. I could swear for days I saw a person the middle. That little white line seemed like it could be a priest's collar to me. Great shots and editing.

Here's one from a series that I took with my HP 435 last fall out my back door.

8. You're welcome. There was nobody in the church except me when I took
the photo. Your sunset photo there is spectacular.

9. They Had Been Sending Mt. Palomar Residents TO the Palomar Observatory to "Shelter"
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 10:31 PM by AndyTiedye
Have they been able to evacuate those people?

10. I think they retracted that announcement.
To the best of my knowlege, the Palomar Observatory was NOT used as a shelter yesterday or the day before. I remember hearing one TV newscaster announce that the earlier statement was wrong, that the Observatory was not a designated evacuation shelter. I can't find anything online about it. I could see it being used for a relatively small number of people already on the mountain, who couldn't make it to anywhere else. But I couldn't see them asking people to drive up the twisty mountain road to get to it as a shelter from a fire - what if the fire came up the mountain (which is happening today)? If the fire gets bigger on the mountain, then they might have to use it as a shelter for people who are already up there anyway.
