"Tomorrow Belongs To Me" from Cabaret...
Print: Cabaret Soundtrack - Tomorrow Belongs To Me Lyrics print version

WAITERS
The sun on the meadow is summery warm
The stag in the forest runs free
But gathered together to greet the storm
Tomorrow belongs to me

The branch on the linden is leafy and green
The Rhine gives its gold to the sea (Gold to the sea)
But somewhere a glory awaits unseen
Tomorrow belongs to me

Now Fatherland, Fatherland, show us the sign
Your children have waited to see
The morning will come
When the world is mine
Tomorrow belongs to me
Tomorrow belongs to me
Tomorrow belongs to me
Tomorrow belongs to me

The babe in his cradle is closing his eyes
The blossom embraces the bee
But soon says the whisper, arise, arise
Tomorrow belongs to me
Tomorrow belongs to me

1. That scene

...always gave me the chills. In the movie when the old man shakes his head and the people start standing....chilling.

Cheers

9. Thank you for that clip tainted_chimp, It really does send chills.
This corrupt cabal of corporate criminals cannot be gone soon enough for me - I truly fear they may never be gone. Too many enablers.

12. You're welcome Spacelady...
and you're right about the 'enablers'.
I'm VERY worried about this country, to put it mildly.

It's a living nightmare.

11. Thank-you

...for posting this video.

I wrote a paper in college about this scene and it's symbolism. Creeps me out just as much today as when I originally saw the movie.

Cheers

13. You're quite welcome, Bjornsdotter....
I'm a HUGE Bob Fosse fan, and this film is one of his best, imho.

We were all definitely cheated when he checked out so early.

I miss him so much, and will always wonder what else he had up his sleeve.

8. Indeed! But it's especially chilling in
the original stage version. A party is being held at a house where the old German woman is "keeping company" with and wanting to marry an old Jewish man, and she's getting grief over it from her neighbors and friends; with the exception of the American German teacher and the English cabaret singer, the two leads. A few of the guests are Nazi soldiers, friends of the neighbors, who harass the poor woman about marrying the Jewish man, yelling that he's "not a German." The American starts to get angry, whereupon one of the guests stands up and starts to sing the "Tomorrow belongs to me" anthem. Others join in and soon all of the guests are standing up and singing it, loudly and proudly, with the exception of the American and the English singer, who stand apprehensively outside of the group, suddenly realizing what was beginning to happen. As the lights fade on the scene, a sound snippet of the end of one of Hitler's harangues is played, with the chanting of "Sieg Heil" ringing out.

It is unbelievably chilling, all the more so because we all know what is about to happen. I saw it in the late 80's at the Stratford Festival in Canada, an internationally known professional theater festival, with my mom, stepdad and stepsister. I'd been listening to the movie album for years, but had never seen it on stage and had no idea of just how chilling and effective the scene would be live.

10. Thank-you

.....so much for sharing that.

I wonder why they changed it for the movie? The scene you have described would have been better...showing neighbor against neighbor and how this movement gained speed. Very scary, very relevant to our situation now.

Cheers

2. Tomorrow Belongs to no One...
Very little, if anything is guaranteed.
One thing is sure, each night and day is a blessing.
Good post.

3. I imagine that they will play that
as the Repug 2008 convention theme song.

Of course, it requires a counter-tenor voice, so perhaps they will make Alberto Gonzales a castrato for the occaision.

6. That sounds more like a Giuliani thing.
Is it gonna take tawdry bathroom habits to elect some more Democrats? Most of America is way ahead of you.
It's nothing new. As usual, the people lead, and the politicians follow. Then way over-do it. And get arrested and imprisoned.
Is this a great country or what?

4. Oh My! I meant this as a reply to what Bush would pick for the
New National Anthem, if he could. Oh well, I haven't rested easy since * stole office, so please understand I AM a bit sane government-deprived.
