I agree that it can feel "entertaining" to view insults directed at us from people who are obviously willfully misinformed. "How can they be so stupid?" we say to each other, "I'm series!!!"

The time for making fun of people for their ignorance has ended. After all, it's not really "making fun" in the true sense of what "fun" is. It's mockery - it's malicious, it's hateful, it's unproductive, it's divisive, and it's hurtful.

Really.

Perhaps we could consider, instead, just letting the haters blow out their hate without giving it an audience.

We have better things to work on than hating the haters.

35. May I suggest we DUMP the Hate Mailbag?

Look, it's all kinds of amusement making fun of the rockbound, dittohead people who send hate mail. But exercising an ability for insult doesn't do much more than prove how witty you are.

And as an earlier post clearly pointed out, we hate each other and each other's candidates enough, with our various posts, that we can provide our own "dittoheads" quite effectively.

So why not end it? Leave it up to the Top Ten Conservative Idiots on Monday. Those are public statements by "respected" people, and insulting them actually does some good. Who cares if you insult Gomer Pyle in Knuckledrag, Oklahoma?

The Hate Mailbag had a purpose for me on DU: It gave me the Jerry Springer "At least it's not that bad in my family (or in this case political discussion group)" feeling. When I got turned off by the low level of discourse in a particular thread, I could count on some winger in the Hate Mailbag to take it to a new and ridiculous level. Not only was it amusing, it helped me retain my perspective.

I miss it and think it should return.

I've gotta say, that must have been pretty tough for you growing up - although perhaps in Nigeria the phrase "Hey would ya blow me" doesn't have quite the same impact as it does here.
