Legalization of illegal immigrant kids voted down

October 25, 2007

<snip>Supporters needed 60 votes to advance the proposal, called the DREAM Act, but the tally was 52-44.

The measure would have allowed illegal immigrants who plan to attend college or join the military, and who came to the United States with their families before they turned 16, to move toward legality.

''What crime did these children commit?'' said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

But Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell said: ''I do not believe we should reward illegal behavior." AP

2. A girl I taught graduated at the top of her class from high school and earned her LPN
but she can't get a loan or a scholarship to go to nursing school because her parents brought her here when she was 3 months old. One of the brightest kids I have ever taught has no future. Well, except working in a nursing home or a restaurant. She would be a terrific RN.

Makes me so sad. Why do we treat people like this?

3. Because they're here illegally
They broke the law. Don't you get it? :eyes:

:sarcasm:

It's stupid & punitive to continue to punish minors for what their parents do to them. If the kids keep their noses clean, & get good grades, why can't they get their green card so they can go to school?

5. How do we decide which rules can be broken?
Our leaders, slash that..elected officials..slash that...those in power, have proven that they no longer have to answer to anyone. At some point we have to follow the law or change the law. That is how we will reclaim our country. I do feel sorry for the young woman but it is her parents who are responsible for her predicament. Right now there is little support for any young person trying to go to school. My family has lived that side of America as well. The truth of the matter is, if a young person wants help from this country s/he needs to enlist. They will take anyone and turn them into a citizen as well. We live in a very sorry world. Peace, Kim

7. If our leaders don't have to follow the law
why should she? Excuses & pardons are made for the extremely wealthy & (mostly) white men & women in the power structure who've committed worse crimes than being in the country illegally.
