Yolo Clerk Gives Certificates To Same-Sex Couples
'Certificates Of Inequality' Handed Out Wednesday

POSTED: 12:28 pm PST February 14, 2007
UPDATED: 3:12 pm PST February 14, 2007

WOODLAND, Calif. -- The Yolo County Clerk is taking a stand against California's marriage law and is handing out certificates to same-sex couples Wednesday.

County Clerk Freddie Oakley calls the documents "certificates of inequality." They are not legally binding and Oakley paid for them out of her own pocket.

Oakley said she could not continue to stand by and say "no" to same-sex couples.

"I think it's a discriminatory law, a violation of civil rights -- the government discriminating against people based on gender. And as a woman who is nearly 60, I know something about discrimination based on gender. I think it's a bad law, so this is me protesting a bad law in a small way," Oakley said.
