1. I've been following River since she first did her cameo
on Salam Pax's site in March '03. Whatever happened to him. . .?

Then I've read her blog since August '03.

To watch the eternal hope of the Iraqi's deteriorated to utter despair and ultimate diaspora.

What we have unwittingly wrought on these people has wrought nothing more than suffering on ourselves.

"The first weeks here were something of a cultural shock. It has taken me these last three months to work away certain habits I’d acquired in Iraq after the war. It’s funny how you learn to act a certain way and don’t even know you’re doing strange things- like avoiding people’s eyes in the street or crazily murmuring prayers to yourself when stuck in traffic. It took me at least three weeks to teach myself to walk properly again- with head lifted, not constantly looking behind me."

3. good to know they are settled in Syria
except that nothing is settled. Living on savings it seems so tenuous, to have no idea what next year will bring, if Syria will even let them stay, much less allow employment. To a degree it is an economic boom for Syria, but what happens when the savings run out and the desperate turn to theft or other underground activities?

I'm not sure why the Kurdish family from Baghdad is planning to goto Sweden or Switzerland instead of Kurdistan in Iraq which I understand is fairly stable (at least until Turkey invades).
