ERICA WERNER - AP News - Oct 26, 2007

A federal grand jury investigating California GOP Rep. John Doolittle's ties to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff has subpoenaed the House official responsible for maintaining lawmakers' old e-mails and other records.

The subpoena from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia went to the House's chief administrative officer, Daniel P. Beard. He disclosed it in a notice read on the House floor Thursday evening, in accordance with House rules. ......

Doolittle helped Abramoff's clients, and Abramoff donated campaign money to the nine-term conservative and employed his wife.

Doolittle, himself, and a half-dozen current and former aides were subpoenaed in September .......

I'm researching the Corrupt Bastards Club, and stumbled onto this link. Bush no longer wants to be sen with Doolittle, my guess.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Maryland are handling part of the Jack Abramoff lobbying case because of a possible conflict of interest at Justice Department headquarters, an official with knowledge of the case said Friday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The investigation involves Kevin Ring, a former aide to Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif. Ring later went to work with Abramoff, the one-time GOP super-lobbyist who's now in jail and cooperating in an influence-peddling probe that's focused on Doolittle, among others.

While working with Abramoff, Ring lobbied Justice Department officials including Robert Coughlin while Coughlin worked for the department's office of legislative affairs from 2001-2003, according to an attorney with knowledge of the case. The attorney spoke on condition of anonymity because of the pending investigation.

Ring also provided Coughlin with meals and tickets to events, the attorney said.

(The Politico) Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.), who is under investigation by the Justice Dept., paid his wife another $45,000 last quarter for fundraising work, according to his latest FEC report.

John T. Doolittle for Congress paid $45,000 to Sierra Dominion Financial Solutions Inc., Julie Doolittle's firm, on July 9, the campaign committee's filing with the Federal Election Commission shows. Julie Doolittle was paid for "fundraising services."

Julie Doolittle was paid slightly more than $60,000 by her husband's campaign from Jan. 1 to June 30, and when combined with the last quarter, has earned more than $105,000 so far this year.

Doolittle has defended the campaign payments to his wife, saying she is an effective fundraiser and receives a percentage of what she raises. So far this year, Doolittle has raised $355,581 this cycle, including $61,444 during the last quarter, and Julie Doolittle's take is roughly 30 percent of that total.

WASHINGTON – Gretchen Hass, a Rocklin Republican, has never contributed to Rep. John Doolittle's campaign because he wouldn't speak to the South Placer Republican Women when she was president of the group.

But on Aug. 21, she and her husband, Carl, each wrote checks for $2,300 to Eric Egland, whose fledgling primary campaign for Doolittle's seat raised more money during the three-month period ending Sept. 30 than did that of the beleaguered incumbent.

SAN DIEGO -- A defense contractor emphatically denied bribing former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham as he took the stand in his own defense

.....

Wilkes also testified that while he most often approached Cunningham, he also had support from other lawmakers _ including former Appropriations Committee Chair Jerry Lewis and Rep. John Doolittle, who gave up his seat on the appropriations panel after FBI agents raided his home in April.

Cunningham, 65, is in a federal prison facility across the street from the courtroom where Wilkes' trial is taking place. The disgraced congressman is serving more than eight years after pleading guilty in 2005 to accepting $2.4 million in cash, mortgage payments and other perks from defense contractors.

He has not been called to testify.......

Doolittle investigation sparks turmoil in party
GOP backers and rivals of the longtime congressman face off over how to retain his seat.
By Peter Hecht - Bee Capitol Bureau - Oct 21, 2007
http://www.sacbee.com/111/story/445229.html

In his home county, where Rep. John Doolittle built a potent political machine and inspired a legion of intensely loyal followers, the political fissures are frustrating his base.

As the embattled congressman fends off a Justice Department investigation into his ties with disgraced Washington, D.C., lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his supporters at home are taking aim at Republican challengers and would-be defectors.

In an intense Oct. 10 session, the Placer County Republican Central Committee "indefinitely" postponed a vote to censure Roseville Assemblyman Ted Gaines for forming a campaign committee to consider a run against Doolittle. That was only part of an unfolding local political drama.

Doolittle supporters – led by prominent GOP anti-tax activist Lew Uhler – say they are working to organize a media event demanding that federal prosecutors either charge the congressman or clear his name.
