Cheney Says Bush Will Veto Pro-Union Bill

President Bush will veto pending legislation aimed at boosting union strength, Vice President Cheney told National Association of Manufacturers members at a Wednesday breakfast meeting to kick off the group’s lobbying efforts.

The “Employee Free Choice Act,” currently making its way through the House, would change the process of union elections. Under the measure, if a majority of workers in a workplace sign cards authorizing a union, then the workers would get a union. Under current law, even when a majority of workers ask for union representation, their employers can force them to undergo an election process administered by the National Labor Relations Board. Supporters contend the proposal would strengthen unions against unfair management tactics. Opponents warn that the measure is an effort by unions to exert undue influence after years of waning support.

The manufacturers’ coalition seeks to kill the bill, among a list of four legislative priorities for the 110th Congress. The House Education and Labor Committee is scheduled to mark up the legislation Wednesday.

Cheney, who donned a pink tie for the Valentine’s Day address, also said economic growth would grow from private sector efforts, not the government.

1. It will actually be good old Cheney that will be doing the veto..
Georgie doesn't have enough brain power or speaksmanship (how is that for a new word I just made up...lol) to veto shit...... Just like everything else Georgie supposedly does... To damn bad Cheney doesn't have the balls to get up front on most of these matters...

2. Thanks for posting
I sincerely mean that. However, this is anything but a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. This is the most anti-worker administration ever. Too many workers seem to be unaware of this, so thanks for helping to spread the word. I encourage others to do so, too.

4. I was (prior to retiring) a union worker for about 95 % of my...
working life.... There are good things about Unions and there are bad things as I am sure any and all Union workers are aware of. The bottom line is, a Union is only as strong as it's members... And that is the bottom line...

5. It's tough to pass pro-union legislation with a fascist regime still in place.
They're notoriously anti-union.

6. Does this legislation also have to pass thru the Senate? If so,
it is not likely that a veto can be avoided.... Makes him look good though doesn't it? Basically his first veto in six years that is against the middle class... and the Dems need to focus on this if it were to happen.

7. No surprise here
Did not know we had manufacturing these days. I wish we could put a 500% import tax on the goods these un-american, blood-suckers bring to market after using their cheap foreign labor. There should be a law against them.

8. I know that all here are aware of the manufacturer of clothing items,
and most other products that you are forced to buy these days in all of the Western countries... or at least in Canada and the US..... China is culprit, however Bush is the enabler..... Thus, no Unions, or no jobs...
