Radio Lady Posts This PSA: We go back to Standard Time on Sunday, NOVEMBER 4, 2007 in the U.S.
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 01:33 PM by Radio_Lady
This is a Public Service Announcement from Radio Lady at the DU!

If you turned your clock back one hour on Sunday, OCTOBER 28 at 2:00am in the United States, your time is now incorrect.

New legislation is now in effect; however, people are still confused. Many calendars have been produced that show the WRONG dates for this.

http://wheatoncollege.edu/IT_S/support/DST2007.html

We ran into this problem in the springtime, too.

Here's a handy-dandy calculator.

http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html

Check your clocks carefully.

Good luck.

But then again, I may be wrong about that.

57. LOL!
We're not converting to Vista, either.

Are there any numbers on how successful (or unsuccessful) that release has been?

My husband said he received an email from Microsoft about possible conflicts with the 2007 Daylight Saving Time readjustment.

I didn't get anything from them on my computer -- at least, not that I am aware of.

Thanks for your post.

62. The release didn't go too well
The major PC makers stopped selling desktops and laptops with XP in favor of Vista, but so many were returned by customers angry with Vista that they had to start offering the option of XP again.

Not a good sign... :-)

67. krispos42, I finally figured out what your text signature means under the flag...
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 10:12 AM by Radio_Lady
From Wikipedia:

The flag of the United States consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The United States flag is commonly called "the Stars and Stripes" or "Old Glory," with the latter nickname coined by Captain William Driver, a 19th century shipmaster.

Because of its symbolism, the starred blue canton of the U.S. national flag is called the "union." This part of the national flag also serves as a flag in its own right: the Union Jack used as a maritime flag. The Union Jack served as the naval jack for U.S. warships until 2002, when it was replaced by the First Navy Jack as part of the War on Terrorism. However, the Union Jack continues to be used as a jack by U.S. vessels outside the Navy, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard and NOAA. This Union Jack should not be confused with the, perhaps better known, British Union Jack.

In blazons (a vexillological description using flag terminology), the U.S. flag is described as "a banner Gules, six bars Argent; the canton Azure charged with 50 mullets Argent". This translates to a red flag with six white horizontal stripes; the top left quarter is blue with 50 white stars.

Thanks for your post.

New York Giants defeat Miami Dolphins in London England Wembley Stadium

The New York Football Giants, today, defeated the Miami Dolphins in London England. This was the first NFL regular season game played outside the United States. The 13-10 score was not indicative of the fact that playing conditions were marginal at best.

Wembley Stadium was packed with 90,000 fans cheering on American Football that they may or may not have totally understood. The rain and loose turf made footing slippery and the level of play was similar to games played 40 years ago.

The New York Football Giants record is now 6-2 with next week a "bye" week. The Giants face the Dallas Cowboys in two weeks. If the Giants play Dallas as they did the Miami Dolphins they are sure to lose.

The Miami Dolphins are without a win through eight games this season. They also have a "bye" week next week and then face the Buffalo Bills. The Buffalo Bills may be the only team the Miami Dolphins have a chance to defeat this year.

I don't call it home anymore. Oh, except on frequent vacations!

My former husband and I rooted for the Giants, the Knicks, the Mets, the Rangers, and the Yankees, in alphabetical order. That guy would watch most any sport, and he did, almost ALL the time!

After we divorced in 1971, I met and married this electrical engineer guy from Boston who thinks that POLITICS is SPORT! That's the way it's been for more than three decades.

Have a good week! Peace -- and please give my regards to Broadway!

I have used the ignore function and, when I have, posts by people who I have on ignore show up as "ignored" and I would have to take all the people off my ignore list to see what was being said - if I had wanted to.Or I would have to log out and then log back in and such.

Anyway I think that it has been fun talking to you about a truly weird happening (American football in the land of true football :D ).

8. Unless you are in the European Union .. then the time change is TODAY!
Dr. D. called me from London Heathrow this morning. She said everyone there was totally confused about the time change from Summertime to Standard Time. I assume she meant the other Americans connecting at Heathrow.

I called her back at 10 am EDT (2 pm London) on her European cell number to make sure she was at her gate for the 2:30 pm departure to Bangalore. She was already on the plane.

So this week London is EDT +4. Next week it will be EST +5. That's exactly why aviators use GMT (UCT).

22. Daylight Saving Time changes to Standard time at 2 am on 11/4 .. right?
But 2 AM Eastern is 1 AM Central, which is 12 midnight Mountain, which is 11 pm Pacific. Each time zone changes when that time zone hits 2 am.

24. Yes. In the Fall, (clocks) go back one hour. "Spring Forward (March), Fall Back (November)"
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 02:02 PM by Radio_Lady

The statement could mean that, but it could mean other things, too. Such as each time zone actually CHOOSES when that change goes into effect. But there is no national legislation that allows that!

Hopefully, the confusion is just in my interpretation of the sentence.

Have a good day, whatever the time is!

27. I'm still trying to figure out
whyintheheck we have daylight savings time anyway.

Absolutely nobody I know likes it. And I read somewhere that it actually causes *more* energy usage - people going out to the mall during the extra daylight hours instead of staying home with the lights off, as the theory would have it.

Who is benefiting from it? Or is it just a habit? Or are the people I know totally unrepresentative...? ;)

I've interviewed a couple of authors on this topic over the years I've been in broadcasting.

Also, you might search for "DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME" at Wikipedia or other sources. However, watch out -- Wikipedia may have some outdated information on the new time shifts.

In peace,

46. Explanation of the origin of the change
From the relevant section of the Wikipedia article on :

Starting in 2007, most of the United States and Canada observe DST from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, yielding 34 weeks of DST every year, which is 65% of the year. The 2007 U.S. change was part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005; previously, from 1987 through 2006, the start and end dates were the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October, and Congress retains the right to go back to the previous dates once an energy-consumption study is done.

BTW, while Wikipedia isn't immune to having outdated information, fast updating is one of its strengths as compared to other online resources.

Thanks for the reminder. Frankly I didn't give the time change-change much thought until I noticed my VCR was recording something at the wrong time. Don't forget to check your cameras too. I guess these devices will need to be checked again next Sunday because they will change the time then thinking that is the proper time to do it.

56. No - but the story is repeated at any household where an elderly or disabled person
is employing helpers. In the past I have had quite heated disagreements about the
arrangements - with people citing how another worker insist it be handled six months earlier and now I must comply with that six month old decree.

And then there are the pets - all of a sudden dinner is early or late - and they try and adjust but usually are quite frantic -especially if the dinner is going to be later (Like it might be next week)

At least the pets' reactions can be amusing. And of course the pets don't need to experience a thing, if the owner is not so befuddled and just responds to their pleas.

45. Dr. D just got to Bangalore in the last hour. No DST in India in 2007.
India is GMT + 5 and 1/2 hours (EDT + 9.5).

I guess you don't feel that you're out of step with the rest of the nation, right?

Last spring, I believe we did an audio feature about some town -- or maybe it was an individual property owner -- which/who was 1/2 in Arizona and 1/2 in another state -- I remember it caused SOME confusion.

On edit: If I've met you before on this forum, please excuse. I'm having trouble remembering even a small portion of the screen names of 109,000+ people.

Ye Gods and little fishes...........

63. I dream of a time when we just stay on daylight savings time,
and NEVER go back to standard. I really, really, really, don't like getting home in the dark during the winter months. I have to leave in the dark regardless of the clock we're on, but some daylight at home during the week would be a blessing.

Thanks for the reminder!

69. Good. I am sick of it being so dark when I walk the dog before work.
Now it will be dark when I walk the dog after work. Shit, there is no win-win here. The Amish don't observe daylight saving time. What do they know that we don't?

71. The Amish don't have electric clocks, either, do they?
Are batteries allowed?
