Gunslinging Vice President Cheney has only New York's fowl in his sights - but the human animals are taking no chances. "I don't want him in my backyard," said Viva Ttanata, 63, a farmer whose land adjoins the exclusive upstate hunting ground where Cheney plans to shoot tomorrow. "He scares me. "He'd better take a shooting lesson," he said. "I'll be keeping my dog inside while he's here."
"They keep cracking jokes about it while they're waiting for their sandwiches," said a waitress at the nearby Clove Valley Deli and Cafe. "They keep saying 'Duck! Put your armor on! Don't turn your back on him!'"
In Cheney's best known hunting foray, he blasted his buddy, lawyer Harry Whittington, in the face while aiming at quail in Texas last year. The 78-year-old victim then publicly apologized for inconveniencing the dour veep.
Now Cheney and his weaponry will stalk the Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in the Hudson Valley's Lagrangeville. "I'm getting out of town," said Fred Boehmer, 57, a builder whose home backs onto the hunting grounds.
The ritzy club, which covers 4,000 acres near Poughkeepsie, costs more than $150,000 a year to join, neighbors said. There's an added charge for every bird shot. The actual clubhouse is for men only, said neighbor Charles De La Rock, 55. An annex for the women is across the road. "They separate the wives from the men," he said. "Inside, it's just the good ol' boys."
