Sunrise · A City Commission candidate sent a letter to 1,200 congregants of All Saints Catholic Church, imploring them to vote for "one of our own" and igniting an uproar over what some interpret as anti-Semitism.
The Jan. 29 letter urges parishioners to vote for James DePelisi, a lector at the church. His opponents in the March 13 election, incumbent Irwin Harlem and former Commissioner Roger Wishner, are Jewish.
"My opponents, knowing that I am very involved in the Church, may attack my faith in God and my Christian moral beliefs, in hope that it will dissuade non-Christian voters," DePelisi, 40, wrote. "Moreover, if successful in that attack, they think they will win the race, because the All Saints Parish will not come out to vote. How wrong they are!"
Wishner assailed the letter as a futile attempt to stoke support with "anti-Jewish" rhetoric.
