2. Some products I intentionally avoid, but others, such as
those made in Tibet, I seek out. It just depends on the context, circumstances and so forth. Also, there are probably items I have purchased from Asia that I was not aware came from Asia, given the lax labeling policies here.

Japan used to produce incredible books, even some in English by American artists, and I collect those. But I'm not a fan of Japan's policy regarding the oceans.

I mean what has lead to this particular poll being posted?

But then, I run an Asian Gallery.

6. I am increasingly confused by products I thought were
American and now find are made in China. For instance, I bought some Pfaltzgraff, which is dinnerware and it used to be made in America...only now it is made in China. It becomes more and more difficult to figure out where things are made, they might be sold in America, but made in China. What do you do these days? I want to spend my money on only American made...what's a mom to do?

By the way- WTF is the agenda behind this poll?

I know that the products were made under the same labor, environmental and human rights standards as those made in the U.S. Otherwise, no way.

38. Do you mean the continental US?
The Mariana Islands are US territory that uses slave labor and marks it's products "made in the USA".

Many other products marked "made in the USA" are only partially manufactured here.

10. I recently bought a shirt
The label inside the collar says "American Heritage", followed by "Fresno: The Road to American Tradition". Underneath that, there is a much smaller label: "100% Cotton. Made in Pakistan."

It's very difficult to "buy American" these days, especially on a limited budget. So yes, I buy products made by Asians.

all that I looked at were made in China. I now need a new coffee maker. Guess what. Made in China. I did find a Bunn for $98 amd it was assembled in the US but made in China. I'm now drinking instant.

BTW, just because a company saves money using slaves, doesn't mean they're passing the savings on to you.

Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 07:41 PM by Breeze54
:P

Probably, if and when I shop for laundry baskets and that is rare.

Usually, I buy used at consignment shops or recycle shops for household furniture/items.

I bought a winter night gown, made in Brazil, a month ago. ;)

17. A new yarn I like is made in China.
I don't feel quite so bad, though, since it's distributed by a Michigan company and sold at my local yarn shop.

I try to buy American as much as possible, though, and do what I can to support local businesses.

18. Yes, the production process is globally fragmented.
most of the time even if it says made in China, Taiwan, and where ever that is just refering to the fact that it is where the final product was assembled. The I-pod for example has 400 something pieces, many of which are manufactured all over the world, 25% roughly come from the US. It is however finally assembled in China thus it bears the "made in China" tag. Though this rule doesn't apply to everything of course... but just to illustrate an example.

21. "Asians"? I've never heard it put that way before.
I know many people who try to avoid Communist Chinese made items & a few older people who try to avoid Japanese products but I've never met a single person who tried to avoid any product made by Asians or Orientals.
