Could Al Gore Announce Next Thursday On NBC?
He's scheduled to appear in an episode of "30 Rock." Supposedly, the entire cast wore "Gore '08" T-Shirts during the episode. Why would they do such a thing, unless something was up?

Later that evening, he's on The Tonight Show w/Jay Leno.

Hope Springs Eternal.

But I suppose we only have a few more days, huh? Unless,...there's some law that Gore actually knows about that makes it okay for him to jump in when he decides to. I agree, sumpin's up, though, please may sumpin' be up!

12. What if....
He does announce on 30 Rock, but "in character"? Sort of as the best guerrilla marketing ploy of all time? The episode could be about him running, to create a buzz. No one would really know if he was serious for a few days until an official announcement.

Just a fantasy, but you have to admit it is a good one.

21. Yeah, just like the llast scene of "The Sopranos"
'cuz when that leaked out and got all over the press and analyzed to bits before it was shown it was such a let down and no one even cared to talk about it afterward. :eyes:

You know, sometimes there are multiple takes with different outcomes that are taped. Sometimes there are out-takes, or at least that's what they are perceived to be at the time, that make it into the final cut. Sometimes there are closed sets and dubbing that are done after most of the cast and crew are long gone.

24. The big question...
Is can Al Gore skip New Hampshire, South Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Florida, Michigan, Utah (http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/2008pdates.pdf)

I believe he can safely skip Illinois, Florida, Michigan and Utah, since 2 are huge controversies another is a given for Obama and then there is Utah.

However, skipping New Hampshire, South Carolina and Georgia, I don't know if even Gore can recover from that unless there is a write in procedure for these states in the primaries.

If there is, Al Gore can announce later and be a "write in" candidate in these early states, expressing that he is "willing to serve" if the people want him to run and they can show this by writing him in. That just seems to me to be a nutty end around that isn't necessary to make the point he has been making.

20. "...the entire cast wore "Gore '08" T-Shirts during the episode"
Then why din't he ask the cast not to wear them?

Why hasn't he asked all of the Gore internet sites to close up shop?

Why hasn't he endorsed a Dem candidate?

Why hasn't he announced that he will absolutely, positively, under any circumstances NOT run?

If he's not going to run?

23. because
something's up.

maybe.

hopefully.

after contemplating this way too much, I've decided that he's either running, or, he believes the prospect of him running serves some kind of usefulness, like maybe he thinkgs it is helping draw awareness to issues. So in that scenario he is just riding it and stretching it out as long as possible.

either that, or he's running.

I don't see any other choices at this point.

32. I've considered choice 2 a ton and that may be it, but it failed.
A while ago he dangled the environment as an issue that candidates should embrace if they want to keep him out of the race. (I don't have the link, but can google for it if necessary), but he basically said the usual that he doesn't "plan" to run BUT he doesn't see anyone embracing the environment as a central issue.

At that point I figured some smart candidate would take up the challenge and make the environment the central issue of their campaign #1) because it is freakin important and solves so many problems as a side effect and #2) they wanted the support of Gore.

That has always stuck in my mind as a possible hidden agenda to not ruling out a run, to try and force a candidate to take up the issue. IF that was the strategy, it has long ago failed and he has got to realize that at this point.

So why continue to leave the door open?

I still get stuck with my 3 possibility scenario.

#1) He's stupid.

#2) He's cruel.

#3) He is strongly considering doing it.

28. Hey now ...
... I wrote about all this yesterday in those other Gore threads ! No worries ... GROUP HUG ... as long as he decides to run.

My best guess (and hope) is that he'll announce this Sunday or Monday (in time to make the Illinois filinmg deadline), get in on all the Monday news headlines/lead stories ... and then ride it throughout the week culminating in the 30 Rock/Tonight Show exposure. Everything (including even winning the Nobel, followed by those three policy videos) seems to be coming together just perfectly. I'm extremely optimistic about the upcoming week. Stand strong, fellow Progressives ... ignore the naysayers, and as Jesse always says, Keep Hope Alive !!

34. I'm with you on this...
But how does he get around skipping New Hampshire and South Carolina?

Isn't he creating a more giant hurdle than necessary by skipping these early states?

I guess "delegate" wise it doesn't matter and the fact that his name isn't on the ballot means he won't get hurt with the "gore lost" meme, so he in essence plays for 1 day... 2/5/2008. If he can sweep that day, he wins no matter what happens before hand.

Maybe I just answered my own question, but it seems a steep hill to climb when it is just a matter of a few days between when he would need to announce.

36. Announce Sunday, and then ...
... Come Monday, we ALL can be happy !!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G4kH5F7IQKs

I feel quite strongly that the final decision has already been made (probably well before the 30 Rock taping), and that in 9 days we all will know. That Thursday double header of 30 Rock and The Tonight Show just seems too convenient. Everything else has fallen into place for Mr. Gore so far this year, how could he pass over the biggest prize of all - one which he has sought his whole life - when it looks like 2008 will almost certainly be the Democrat's year to retake the White House ?!? He knows exactly what he could achieve in regards to the environment and global warming in the office of President of the U.S.

It's happening people ... mark my words, IT'S HAPPENING !!

I think that if he is not going to announce he will issue his Sherman statement. I was pretty confident he was going to get in, but now every day seems less likely. It seems pretty risky to skip out on the early primaries, but if he can take super Tuesday he has the nomination so it is not impossible. At this point I think it is more likely a not though.

45. I still keep thinking about how coy he was about making an
"announcement" at the Oscars before getting "cut off". Granted, it was the Oscars, but that kind of playfulness felt like there was some truth behind it. Kinda like when you were a kid and wanted that toy that your mom and dad had that sly "we'll see..." reaction to... the kinda of reaction that made you know you'd find it under the tree come Christmas.

Here's hoping again....

47. Prediction: It's not going to happen.
Gore is enjoying the good life too much as a rock star/matinee idol . Why should he throw all that away to enter the political arena again? He has been there/done that. He knows the kind of headaches that go with running for office. Politics is a mean, dirty world, and he would be fair game again, just as snyone else would.

I think he would have less authority on the issue of global warming if he were POTUS. Nothing a president(any president) does is non-political. I suppose it boils down to where his priorities are now, and whether he would want the office enough to go through the dogfight it would entail.
