Singer, actor Robert Goulet dies at 73

Robert Goulet, the Canadian-raised singer known for his baritone voice and frequent TV appearances, has died, a spokesman for the singer said. He was 73.

He had been awaiting a lung transplant in a Los Angeles hospital after becoming ill on Oct. 13 with a form of pulmonary fibrosis while returning from a concert appearance in Syracuse, N.Y.

In a career that began in Edmonton and took him to New York, Los Angeles and stages around the world, Goulet won a Tony Award, a Grammy Award, and legions of fans, but little critical acclaim.

Blessed with matinee idol looks, Goulet started his acting career in Canada and became a star on Broadway in the role of Lancelot in the 1960 musical Camelot.

"South Pacific" playing the older man's role made famous by Ezio Pinza on stage (Emil deBecque -sp???).

I can still hear his beautiful young baritone voice in my mind tonight.

Ah, life! How quickly it comes and goes...

He hated Robert Goulet -- one of my useless trivia facts... he was known to smash TV's when RG was on the air. Myself, I wish him to RIP

4. Bummer. His self-effacing commercials in his later years were great.
My mom liked him back in the day.

14. My Mom also loved him
always watched him on TV, Carol Burnette show, Ed Sullivan, always listened to his albums. She was thrilled when we sent her and my dad to see him in concert sometime in the late 70's. My Mom also couldn't stand his wife (now Ex) Carol Lawrence.

He was a great talent.

18. That's funny.
My parents saw him back in the late 60s/early 70s at some ritzy nightclub in Vegas or LA or somemplace. Swoon central.

7. I am heartbroken tonight. His voice rings through my life.
Almost like when Sinatra left us.

What a baritone. (Me, too. Not quite as good.) If ever he would leave us. And now he has. And once there was a place called Camelot.

For anyone under 50, this may be difficult to understand, but his voice resonates. I hate to say this, but it basically leaves Tony Bennett and Andy Williams.

Goulet was magnificent.

10. Don't apologize. What a voice. This one hits harder than expected.
I think we all appreciated him more than we realized. This may get more reaction in the next few days than many expect. Sure hit me unexpectedly.

If ever I would leave you
It wouldn't be in summer.
Seeing you in summer I never would go.
Your hair streaked with sun-light,
Your lips red as flame,
Your face witha lustre
that puts gold to shame!

But if I'd ever leave you,
It couldn't be in autumn.
How I'd leave in autumn I never will know.
I've seen how you sparkle
When fall nips the air.
I know you in autumn
And I must be there.

And could I leave you
running merrily through the snow?
Or on a wintry evening
when you catch the fire's glow?

If ever I would leave you,
How could it be in spring-time?
Knowing how in spring I'm bewitched by you so?
Oh, no! not in spring-time!
Summer, winter or fall!
No, never could I leave you at all!

11. RIP, Mr. Goulet. Time to dig out my CD of "Camelot"; his performance

in it as Lancelot in 1960 was extraordinary. I was far too young to see the show, but one of my older sisters did and bought the album, so I listened to it quite a bit back then.

"C'est moi" - a young, powerful voice at its best. Wow. I did see him play the King in a revival of Camelot a whole lot of years later, but nothing can replace my first memories of his voice as Lancelot.

"I know in my soul what you expect of me, and all that and more I shall be."

He was.
