More proof that government can't do anything right... I went to the DMV yesterday
It was traumatic getting a new license to reflect my new address.

First off, they were open late on Mondays, or so the sign on the door said, for people that can't make it other times. Where's the fun in that? It would be SO much better if people are forced to take unpaid time away from work to go during corporate 'banking hours'.

Next, there was no line at the desk. I just walked right up and leaned on the counter. How is this a model of efficiently? Unless people are crowded up in a tightly-packed line, maximum people-hours per counter is NOT being achieved!

Third, I was helped promptly! Obviously, they have too many people there, too much salary and benefit costs than needed, because I did not have to beg for service. How can they make giant profits and pass out massive executive bonuses with that kind of waste of money?

Fourth, the clerk that helped me was polite, prompt, and well-informed. Obviously she could be replaced with a cheaper, angrier, slower, and dumber person, again, for money savings.

And finally, it only cost $11.75 to get a new license. How can private corporations make millions with prices so low?

Governor Pawlenty, PLEASE privitize this operation! I want to wait in indeterminate lines and pay a fortune for the privilage of fighting with an ignorant paper-pusher while your business friends play golf in Aruba on my dime! Pleae please please please please???

2. If you want all of that just move to Michigan.

Not only is the DMV slow with long lines, but this year I'll be renewing my DL for around $35. My SO got a divorce and was awarded the van that was in both her and her ex's name, so now she has to pay sales tax to have the title put in her name plus the title fee. It seems that the law was changed a few years back so double taxing the vehicle is allowed.

3. He he he!
I've spent some time dealing with the Connecticut DMV. I used to deliberately drive 45 minutes away just to avoid the busy local ones! But it's been over a decade since I've had to deal with them. :-)

Advanced computerization of the department has increased efficiency so much that I don't mind going there anymore either.

5. It's still a hellhole in CA. Last time I went to renew my
license I had an appointment, and was still kept waiting an hour. The employees were mean as ever. Consider yourself lucky.

6. My CA DMV experiences have been very different
And I visit the Daly City DMV. Make an appoitment and they keep it. I'm in and out, and I deal with crisp, businesslike folks.

11. Whoever runs the Thousand Oaks office ought to
visit up north to see how it could be done. Of course everything in TO is backward and no one has a clue how to run a business, so the DMV is in keeping with everything else around here.

15. I've spent a lot of time in the CT DMV
They weren't mean or anything, but busy busy busy. IIRC you got processed fast once you got your number called.

South Dakota and Minnesota... very nice, no lines. Getting my registration renewed was easy as pie, too.

9. The DMV exists in bricks these days?
I've been doing mine with clicks for at least 10 years. Seriously, the last time I had to go to a DMV was in NJ and it was a bloody nightmare. Florida is a dream and even when I had to go into an office 12 years ago it was the kind of pleasant experience you described. I love the internet! Renewed twice and two address changes all done online.

24. How do they test for eye sight?
I'm glad my state's DMV lets you change your address online but I don't have a problem with having to go there once a decade and proving that your vision hasn't deteriorated.

I imagine there comes a point where you have to go back in. I just haven't hit it yet. I'll tell you in 2010.

14. Obviously you don't live in Texas...
My new license that was suppose to arrive in 3 months, took over year of hassling with the morons* behind the glass.

They blamed it on everything under the sun, but would always say we will get it to you this week.

Finally, I demanded a supervisor and upon threatening him with calling our local news and reporting this BS, he promptly produced my new license. WTF?

I asked him what the problem was and how he could produce it just like that?

the non answer answer. "I'm a supervisor, I can do things like that".

Whatever. I took it and went home.

why people go postal is no longer a mystery to me.

19. I love hearing the people that complain about OMV. Usually starts with
"Just because I didn't have ... "

Which is all you need to know, they didn't have what they needed and expected the rules to be thrown out for them.

21. So, you're on Norquist's side?

My goal is to cut government in half in twenty-five years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.
Grover Norquist

Well remember, if government doesn't work, it's because THAT'S the goal of all the privitizing companies and their toadying allies in government, the Republicans, and unfortunately, a lot of Democrats too. They WANT government not to work so people will clamor for it to be privatized.

Then they can charge you more, give you less, give some CEO a multi-million dollar salary paid by taxpayers, with little or no accountability.

Here's an idea. Maybe elect people to office who will actually MAKE government work?? Just a thought.
