If MSNBC can have 2 RW shills like Russert & Williams moderate
a Dem debate, they should have Mike Malloy & Randy Rhodes moderate the Pub debate!

That was a comment just made by a caller to the Stacy Taylor radio show a few minutes ago. I LOVED the idea, and thought I'd share it with all of you.

McNeil had some real integrity, but not Lehrer. His only job is to LOOK objective.

It's grossly unfair and we shouldn't stand for any LONGER! DA-UM!

Goddamn remember when we used to have PBS debates, this bullshit makes me sick, nothing but media hacks looking for gotcha's and headlines for their own stupid shows.

It's a farce.

6. I thought they were very good and didn't let Hillary wiggle off the hook for a change..
I'm tired of moderators who pitch softballs, make it about the horse race and who let candidates answer the question they want to answer instead of the question they were actually asked.

I say good job Russert and Williams..

And let me add that I saw Russert moderate the Bill Nelson - Katherine Harris Senate race debate live in person in 2006 at the University of Central Florida and thought he did an excellent job of holding Krazy Katie's feet to the fire there too so he is a lot less biased than you apparently are..

13. I don't think so.
And I'm certainly not. Russert strikes me as a media whore. And Williams, simply as a dull, self-important newscaster type. You have no more proof that they're right wing shills, than I have that they're not.

17. Agreed. Williams and Russert have their obvious flaws, but shills for the right wing?
Williams is a huge disappointment. He rarely can give a sharp analysis of anything; he always defers to the academic approach: "Obama's declaration that he would use military force against terrorist camps in Pakistan even without Pakistani cooperation was a true sign of his naivete and lack of campaign experience. It did, however, give him some foothold as being tough on terror." It's always like that from him -- debating both sides of the issue. His style is one I don't like, but it's just his style.

Russert is pretty consistent with all candidates in his interviews. He challenges them repeatedly to defend their words, and he will not let them dodge the question until they either give a reasonable answer or flatly refuse to answer. When he's interviewing someone we don't care about, he seems wonkish and petty. When he's interview one of our own (Dodds!), he seems mean and relentless.

There's a lot of fuzzy area here, folks. You can dislike someone who is not a whore for the Republicans.

btw, I always get a kick out of certain DU posters, who say the exact things in reverse, as right wing pukes. It's funny.

23. My impression has always been that Williams bends over backwards to appear fair.
Nearly to a fault. I believe that he finds it necessary to give both sides of an issue even when he is certain that one side is dead wrong.

In many ways, that makes him a reasonable journalist.

28. I have it on good authority
Bob Somerby, who quoted his words, that Williams continuously made ridiculous attacks on Gore during campaign 2000. Maybe he's not rightwing, just a clueless lib who buys alot of the rightwing talking points that the rest of the shills are pushing. Some ridiculous attempt at being "fair" or "objective" but it sure did advance his career.

I also personally saw him on the Tonight show sounding like part of the Right Wing Noise Machine. I cannot remember exactly what he said, and maybe I am just partisan, but as I recall, a) it was an attack on prominent Democrats, and b) it was not true. If not for b) I might say he was just being a journalist, but the truth matters and he was not telling it.

32. I think he's someone without a great deal of
courage, and that he has this ideal in his head about being non-partisan. He's afraid of being attacked by the right wing noise machine for being a "liberal", and he bends over backward to avoid that label. Funnily enough, that doesn't stop him from being attacked by the right wing noise machine.

Just adding an adjective to "asshole" is a perfect way of summarizing many Republicans, and all Bushies.

I can't pick just one for Bush, though. So many fit so well.

30. My biggest problem is the way they state the questions.
ESPECIALLY when they ask each candidate to "Pledge" something they cannot totally control! It's not only Russert & Williams either! I've heard requests to "Pledge" to guarantee all troops will be out of Iraq by a specific time, & guarantee Iran will NOT obtain a nuke.

Anyone who's honest & realistic can't possibly commit to those things, because THEY personally cannot control those things. Commitments like "I guarantee you I will only nominate XXXXX people to the SCOTUS, or I will promise to propose a health care plan to Congress within my first 60 days as Prez are things THEY can control.

39. And where do you think Russert's insistence on getting an answer to that originated?
I agree with you that the concept of projecting ahead 14 months and making such a pledge is laughable, but that is NOT the attitude embraced by mainstream DU. Threads have been started that declare without ambiguity that a true progressive could never embrace a candidate who did not openly pledge to end the war in Iraq ASAP.

If that question is part of your criteria for Russert being a shill, that would make him a leftwing shill.
