Colorado Springs
A former charter school boys basketball coach is accused of regularly hitting players in the groin, exposing some to pornography, and pouring water on them in cold weather, according to court records. Gregory Lynn Burr, 28, faces dozens of charges involving 10 teenagers 14 to 17 years old. The incidents at The Monument Academy in the Tri-Lakes area spanned several months, records show. One student sought medical attention for a groin injury he attributed to the coach’s strikes and later had scrotal surgery. Other students told police the strikes to the testicles were “the kind of hits that made you lay down” or “made you stop for a minute to catch your breath.”
The 39 counts range from sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust to child abuse and obscenity. Burr posted $10,000 bail Dec. 14 after his arrest, records show. His attorney, Phil Dubois, said the charges are unwarranted and the product of an overly aggressive District Attorney’s Office.
“Mr. Burr is not a sex offender or anything close to it,”
The article goes on:
A student said Burr would ask them, “What is the capital of Thailand?” When they would answer “Bangkok,” he would hit them in the groin.
The students are not being named because they are possible victims of sexual assault.
Three boys told police that Burr showed them pornography on his home computer, including men with disfigured penises and women with multiple body piercings. Students also alleged that the coach, who drove them to and from basketball games, had poured water on them and rolled down windows of the car during cold weather, an “odd game to play and kind of cruel,” a student told police. Another student said he was made to get out of the car and run behind it. One was asked to run around a rest area between Castle Rock and Monument in the nude, the documents said.
That student also had surgery for a swollen scrotum, which a doctor said could have occurred from trauma or infection, according to the arrest affidavit.
