Breaking in VA: GOP Rep. Tom Davis' Wife Shakes Down Fed Contractors in State Race
Edited on Thu Nov-01-07 04:32 PM by CorpGovActivist
DUers -

Howdy from Virginia, where we're in the midst of our off-cycle state elections.

As some of you may know, Congressman Tom Davis has been funneling money to his wife's tight re-election race in Northern Virginia. She is running for re-election to a state Senate seat that (by all rights) ought to be a Democratic seat.

Jeannemarie Devolites Davis is Davis' second wife ("values voter champion" that he is, he left his first wife for Jeannemarie after they began rubbing elbows during their Abramoff exploits: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannemarie_Devolites-Davis)

So, it comes as little surprise that this information broke on the blog of her Democratic opponent today, from a "Concerned Federal Contractor":

http://blog.oxroadsouth.com/2007/10/31/morning-coffee-at-the-senior-center.aspx#comment-631468

An excerpt:

*************************************************

"It is inappropriate for the Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee - which has jurisdiction over investigations into Federal contractors' activities - to lend his name and cache to fundraising activities that target those contractors, especially when the candidate in question is his wife. This creates the perception that donating to her campaign curries favor with him. <...>

I am weighing whether or not to write jointly to Chairman Waxman (Chair of the House Oversight Committee) and to Chairwoman Jones (Chair of the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct) to complain about how Congressman Davis and his wife have abused the data in the CCR. Given her consulting firm's previous ethics problems, I would have thought she would have learned her lesson by now.

I can only imagine the outcry if Senator Clinton had done this, can't you?"

*************************************************

It seems that Jeannemarie has been mining the federal Central Contractor Registration database for names of Federal contractors (who her husband oversees as Ranking Member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee) to shake them down for campaign contributions.

Anyone out there itching to send the national GOP leadership (which includes Tom Davis) a "message by proxy" that this continuation of Tom Delay/Jack Abramoff style "pay for play" in Federal contracting is unacceptable may wish to consider sending a donation to Chap Petersen, Mrs. Davis' Democratic opponent:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chap_Petersen

http://www.fairfaxsenator.com/

Trust me, it will send shock waves throughout the GOP insider circles inside the Beltway if Tom Davis's wife loses, especially given the heavy local DC/Northern Virginia air time she has bought with national GOP money to run negative ads against Chap. Her defeat would strike another bit of fear into the national RNC going into 08, because it would be seen as a rebuke of Davis' efforts to thwart Waxman on the Oversight Committee (e.g., Davis' knee-jerk defense of Halliburton, Blackwater, etc.).

Hope this message finds everyone well and gearing up for 08!

Best,

- Dave

I love the off-cycle elections, and am convinced they're designed to give policy wonks and political junkies their fix.

Nice to see you!

... when you climb into the ring and help defeat a political machine like Davis'.

(Plus, the weather is a helluva lot nicer in VA than NH! No parkas required to go door-to-door.)

16. She's on the Virginia Reapportionment Joint Committee...
... and you just know that Tom and she are looking to do to Virginia what Tom Delay did in Texas:

The Davis machine is an amateurish version of the Delay machine.

26. It's very interesting to me that Tommy is swinging his wife to the left..
after his disastrous attempt at swinging Fairfax County to the hard right. He ran a very conservative repub, Mychele Brickner under a "no new taxes" banner for Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. It just so happened that Mychele's husband made his living off of hefty government contracts, an inconvenient truth.

Mychele also got landslided into oblivian and Tommy decided to become a "moderate" after that.

28. Northern Virginia...
... is an entity unto itself, and the hard line stuff won't work here.

I attribute three factors:

(1) the level of education;
(2) the number of real-world-experience public servants (who understand that "simple" solutions aren't); and
(3) the high number of transplants.

All that and easy access to the recreation opportunities and charms of the Old Dominion! (Or, for the more adventurous, a cross of the mountains into the other Virginia!)

13. Brew a Pot of Coffee...
... the answers could take a while. I wonder what the Justice Department lawyers and FBI agents drink (especially those who might be investigating official corruption charges against a prominent Northern Virginia Congressman and his wife)? That must be some high-octane brew keeping them plowing through the piles of evidence.

7. A hearty welcome back CGA!!!!
Jeannie and Tommy are quite the pair aren't they? There are also charges of voter tampering as well. It seems that old Jeannie's campaign "accidentally" put "vote today" flyers on people's doorknobs last week. Oh, and those were "accidentally" placed in Democratic leaning neighborhoods, go figure.

8. Jeannie and Tom under Justice Microscope?
Inquiring minds in NoVa want to know.

: )

There's more to the story of why the VA GOP chose to avoid a primary to select Mark Warner's Senate opponent, and go with a convention instead.

The smart VA GOP money is betting that Davis may be facing a Federal indictment before the 08 Senate race. That may just include his partner-in-crime, Jeannemarie, too.

10. Yes, the Democratic Party has filed a complaint...
they may have stepped in it this time. Unfortunately it will probably be very hard to prove. The Devolites Davis campaign also published the home addresses of Chap Peterson and his family. Those two are real old school thugs.

Rumor has it that screenshots of the Devolites-Davis campaign shakedown e-mails are beginning to circulate.

Pay attention to the local media adverts Chap runs in the next few days.

Bloomberg Backs Gun-Control Republican in Virginia
By Sewell Chan

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has reached across state and party lines to support candidates who agree with his policies, is scheduled to appear in Northern Virginia on Thursday afternoon to endorse State Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, a moderate Republican who is facing a tough fight for re-election.

Ms. Davis, 51, represents Fairfax County, an affluent Washington suburb that has been increasingly trending Democratic. Her husband is Representative Thomas M. Davis III, also a moderate Republican from Fairfax County, who recently decided not to run for the United States Senate that is being vacated by Senator John W. Warner, who is retiring.

Ms. Davis was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1997 and to the Virginia Senate in 2003. She is seeking a second term but faces a strong challenge from J. Chapman Petersen, a Democrat who is a former state delegate and a member of the Fairfax City Council.

Ms. Davis’s district is so heavily Democratic now that every voting precinct favored Jim Webb, the Democrat, in a close-fought Senate race last year. The incumbent, Senator George Allen, a Republican, was narrowly defeated.

A news release from Ms. Davis’s office emphasized her “independent and courage, in particular her steadfast support of legislation to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” Ms. Davis has supported measures to require criminal background checks for purchasers at gun shows and allow local governments to ban firearms at public schools and libraries. She also voted against a measure to outlaw the controversial sting operations New York City has conducted to catch out-of-state gun dealers who agree to so-called straw purchases, in which people ineligible to obtain firearms use proxies to fill out the paperwork.

There's hope, folks.

I think it is a distinct possibility that Virginia's 13 Electoral College votes will flip next year, and it's almost a lock on picking up the extra Senate seat.
