Doing a lead up with Obamamania and a quick shot of OB magazine would have been funny.

They killed it by extending what should have been a 5 sec quick joke to 2 minutes.

If the goal is to imitate The Daily Show, then why have actors with little or no background in comedy as hosts? In case Joel Surnow hasn't noticed, much of the success the Daily Show enjoys can be attributed to the fact that the host is a professional comedian, and a smart one at that, and also writes much of his own material.
