DU's althecat Stands Up to Aussie PM who Slanders Obama & Democrats - Kickin' Ass
Edited on Fri Feb-16-07 01:20 AM by autorank

Towards the end of the press conference NZ Prime Minster Helen Clark became somewhat irate that Scoop was continuing to seek to ask questions about the subject of the War and brought the conference to a close.

The PM was pissed off at DU's own althecat who, unlike most journalists, did not sit there idly while the Australian PM defamed Barak Obama and insulted American Democrats. He pushed questions and got a dirty look (see 1st pic) from the New Zealand Prime Minister. "Scoop" Independent News has been a supporter of United States voting rights causes since 1992. "Scoop" publishes what American papers fear to print - American Coup II

(autorank: You just know the NZ PM is giving that "look" to althecat

Today's Trans-Tasman bilateral press conference ended prematurely as New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark shielded the Australian Prime Minister John Howard from questions Scoop.co.nz sought to ask about Iraq and the Aus. PM's recent remarks about U.S. Senator Barack Obama.

You can listen to the press conference in full here:

Earlier Mr Howard told the press conference that he stood by the remarks he made about the Senator at the weekend.

On Sunday it was reported that John Howard told the nine network:

"If I was running al-Qaida in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and pray, as many times as possible, for a victory not only for Obama, but also for the Democrats."
John Howard went on to say among other things.

"I think that would just encourage those who wanted completely to destabilise and destroy Iraq, and create chaos and victory for the terrorists to hang on and hope for an Obama victory.

"If they think the next President of the U.S. is going to pull out early in 2008, they will hang on and they will live for the day that that happens because they know then they will have won. … I hope Mr Obama does not become President of the U.S.

"I hope the next President of the U.S., and I don't know who he or she may be, has a more responsible attitude towards terrorism than that."

Mr Howard's unusual intervention into the US political arena has been widely criticised in the Australian media where some media have accused him of using "dog whistle" politics.

The term "dog whistle" refers to a form of subliminal attempt to appeal to a racist underbelly in his domestic electorate via his criticism of an African American presidential aspirant.

During today's press conference both Trans Tasman Prime Minister's were asked several questions about their views on the Iraq War. And in his second Question John Howard was asked by Scoop about Barack Obama.

Later John Howard was further asked whether he stood by his remarks about Barack Obama and by his initial decision to back the invasion of Iraq.

Towards the end of the press conference NZ Prime Minster Helen Clark became somewhat irate that Scoop was continuing to seek to ask questions about the subject of the War and brought the conference to a close.

Hi knobody0 - good to see you!

This is excellent, a commentary on the public transcript by a major Australian reporter. Ruh roh, althecat is very persistent. The truth can be uncomfortable.

Clark not impressed with Iraq questioning
AUSTRALIAN PM
PM - Friday, 16 February , 2007 18:18:00
Reporter: Peter Lewis
http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2007/s1850043.htm
Transcript

Our New Zealand Correspondent, Peter Lewis, was there for PM.

PETER LEWIS: Over the past 24 hours the two leaders had been at pains to stress just how much they now have in common, but a handful of questions into their post-meeting press conference and the interest shifted from trouble spots in our near vicinity to Iraq, an issue where they are poles apart.

REPORTER ("Scooop"): Prime Minister Howard, do you have anything to say to Senator Barack Obama today? Did you discuss Iraq with the New Zealand Prime Minister?

JOHN HOWARD(Australian PM): Do I have anything to say to Senator Obama today? Eh…

REPORTER: Yes. Is that finished now?

JOHN HOWARD: Sorry, hm?

REPORTER: Is that finished now, the discussion with Senator Barack Obama?

HELEN CLARK(New Zealand PM): Right. Right, Thankyou, we've heard the question.

JOHN HOWARD: Yes. We did not discuss in substance Iraq. There was a brief unilateral reference to it but we did not discuss the issue, no.

PETER LEWIS: Ms Clark was asked whether she thought things were better or worse in Iraq as a result of the invasion of 2003.

HELEN CLARK: Well, I don't really want to go down that track today. Any other questions?

ALISTAIR THOMPSON ("Scoop"): What about you, Prime Minister Howard, do you think it's been worth it, Iraq?

JOHN HOWARD: Well, we all know on this issue, New Zealand and Australia have a different position. I respect, the position taken by New Zealand and I'm sure New Zealand respects the decision that we took.

PETER LEWIS: The query had come from a reporter from New Zealand's left-leaning web news service, Scoop, Alistair Thompson, and he a few more but his Prime Minister was having none of it.

HELEN CLARK: Australia is our closest friend and neighbour. I respect Australia's decisions, don't always agree with them, that's on the public record, but of course I respect them.

ALISTAIR THOMPSON: Prime Minister Howard do you...

HELEN CLARK: Actually you are now on about the fifth question, so we're not treating it like a student rally and audience, thank you.

I'm going to take any other questions thank you.

Yes?

PETER LEWIS: A short while later Mr Thompson seized a moment of silence to drill again into John Howard's full and frank assessment of US Democrat presidential hopeful, Senator Barack Obama.

JOHN HOWARD: Look I don't retract anything that I said. (THIS IS NEWS!!!)

snip

PETER LEWIS: Helen Clark tried to swat his questions away time and again before abruptly blowing the whistle on the event in exasperation.

ALISTAIR THOMPSON: Prime Minister Clark...

HELEN CLARK: Sorry I've got one last Australian question here.

ALISTAIR THOMPSON: Prime Minister Clark...

HELEN CLARK: No you can't I'm sorry. I've got the last question here.

ALISTAIR THOMPSON: Is it good not to...

HELEN CLARK: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, you, you, you endeavour to heckle from the back row of every news conference I give and you're not going to do it to this one. So I think we will be taking a (inaudible().

Thank you.

JOHN HOWARD: (laughing) Ohh geez, this sounds very familiar. Thank you.

MARK COLVIN: The Prime Minister, John Howard, ending Peter Lewis' report from Wellington.

Well "damn" Autorank we too are proud they publish your articles and I am proud of Scoop for standing up to Howard and the PM. It's just too bad they don't want to be questioned. Whether it was a "dog whistle" or just plain a buttinski I would be very happy to see Howard go, But then I am not an Australian so it's none of my business. Whoops, just like our politics are none of his.

Yep, "Scoop" is a first rate news organization. Imagine if we had ten or fifteen major dailies like
"Scoop" in the USA...or if we had even one;)

Right, it's none of our business until Howard invited us to make it our business. Making racist
allusions to Obama, what a low life. You like that pic of the NZ PM? She's pissed off at somebody.

32. Funny thing is he actually looks really sad in lots of the pictures we got.
I think the strain is starting to tell.

Also... he was not his usual punchy self. He actually answered most of the questions other than those I asked. And at the end he even critcises the US Govt. for dragging the chain so much on the David Hicks Gitmo trial.

This is actually quite a dramatic change of his position as far as I am aware... it sort of got buried in all the fireworks though.

AUSTRALIAN REPORTER (M):
Prime Minister Howard, the US Military has released further details on the new case against David Hicks, alleging that he collected intelligence information about a US embassy and he did some advanced Al Qaeda training. Are you confident that upon hearing that information the Australian public may lose some sympathy for David Hicks? Or your ministers?

AUSTRALIA PM JOHN HOWARD:
I'm not going to make an on-the-run assessment of that. And I'm not going to try and put myself in the place of the military commission, but I do think it's important that the public know, as it were, both sides of the proposition.

My principal concern is that Hicks be brought for trial, that he have his day in court as soon as possible. That is my principal concern and our energies will be directed on every available occasion towards encouraging and pressuring the Americans for that to come about. He has been held without trial for too long. I held the view some years ago that it was right that he face a military commission in the United States, with improved conditions of operation because he could not be tried for what he is alleged to have done in Australia because it wasn't a crime at the time the offences allegedly took place.

But it has dragged on too long--partly due to the appeals by others and partly due to the slowness of the American procedure. But I think the American Administration is well and truly aware of how unhappy we are at the delay, and they are aware that we are pressing them almost on a daily basis to get the trial on as quickly as possible. That way, ultimately, all of the facts on both sides will be out in the open.

But I'm not going to try and put myself in the shoes of the Australian public collectively. I think the best thing and justice is best served by the trial occurring as soon as humanly possible. Thank you.

And thankyou for the big ups AtomicKitten.... its appreciated... has been a tense day.

8. New Zealand has no troops in Iraq
Australia does.

Clearly Howard (Aussie PM) disagrees with Obama and he voiced his opinion. I may be in the minority here, but Howard should not apologize for his comments, unless we are in the business of quashing opinions counter to our own.

This exchange is a good thing, or at least an interesting one.

30. The issue is why exactly did Howard make these remarks?
.. he is a old practitioner of dog whistle politics. How come he attacks Obama? He has never said anything about Kerry or Clinton or Edwards.

... is this a case of target the black guy to appeal to the red necks in the outback? Seems a definite possibility.

63. It does not SEEM a definite possibility
It IS a definite possibility. He has been governing with racist undertones since he came to power in 1996. Why else would he imprison refugees and their families behind razor wire? He once mentioned that we have too much Asian immigration.

John Howard is a lying, sniveling, racist little nerd. He still refuses to believe that the world is a more dangerous place since the invasion of Iraq. There was only one person in Iraq who could keep the peace and suppress a tribal civil war, and the Americans (with Howard,s blessing) hung him. We have a federal election coming up at the end of the year. Just watch him play the race card.

72. It'd be one thing if Howard took all of the Democrats to task
for speaking out against the war and for troop reduction. But that's not what happened. He singled out Obama and has tried character assasination on only him, as if he's the only Democrat in the entire country who feels this way. He is the latest in a line of neo-cons who have attempted to hang the radical Islamic stone around Obama's neck, as if Al Qaida is his idea and that the sectarian violence of that country is his device to get his mitts on the presidency. His boy, Murdoch, let his dogs off their leashes over here, attempting to hang radical islam around Obama's neck by criticizing the fact that he wears suit jackets and shirts without ties--saying that's how Osama bin Laden wears his. Fox Noise channel has done their utmost to disparrage Obama and now here's Murdoch's boy jumping in where he doesn't belong.

This on top of the fact that they only have 1,400 total troops over there, when we've got 150,000 total over there. THAT is why he's getting his ass whipped, not because he deserves 'free speech'. What he thinks about our political process is irrelevant as nothing he or his country does influences our political process.

Howard most certainly needs to apologize for sticking his gotdamn nose where it doesn't belong and where it's intrusion was not asked. You can best believe that if any American politico did the same thing to Australian politics, the Aussies would be incandescent over it.

How is it that we get a press guy demanding an explanation for slanders against Obama and the Democrats, really speaking truth to grizly power, way down in the great nation of New Zealand but
here we can't get a one of them to stand up and tell* he's a lying goof ball?

The Australian Press could have taken their cues from the UK, those journalists can be brutal. I love it when George goes to Europe, they take no prisoners. We don't get much of a report of the "press" brutality he is put through but the foreign papers report it. I even love the UK Parliament and the way they boo Blair. Wish we had the same thing here but then again, Blair is still there. I'm counting on a new wind coming to blow this period of time away like the sands of the desert, I don't even want to see their footprints. You do a great job Autorank and have been consistent in bringing the voting irregularities to the attention of people and have kept it in their face. Howard quizzed over Iraq strategy in NZ

...

So, Peter, Iraq dominated the media conference today. What was the tenor of the questions?

PETER LEWIS: Well, not surprisingly, journalists from both sides of the Tasman were interested in Helen Clark's assessment and views on Australia's continued involvement in Iraq, because the New Zealand Government of course has been very stridently opposed from the outset.

Now, Ms Clark initially attempted to sort of brush it away and move on and say, look, this wasn't the day to really go into those sorts of details.

And it had actually been led up by a question from a reporter from a left-wing website here in New Zealand called Scoop, who actually kicked the ball off by asking John Howard whether he had anything further to say to Senator Barack Obama. And Mr Howard …

A day after anti-war protesters staged a noisy demonstration against Mr Howard's arrival, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark walked out of the press conference when a reporter from online left-wing news site Scoop continued to ask about the war

...and knew it was you when the reporter mentioned Scoop. Congratulations on sticking it to Johnny boy, Australia’s very own lapdog. Keep it up. I believe Howard is going to one or some of the one-day cricket matches at some stage, so you may get another chance to rattle his cage. If you do get another chance to question him, can you ask him: do you take personal responsibility for the quagmire in Iraq? Watch him come unglued, especially if he doesn’t have Helen to bail him out. I'd pay to see that.
But great work, this Aussie applauds you.

Yeah maybe you'll win a game or two in the series. ;) Looks like Brett Lee could be out of it on our side, so anything's possible.

My bad, Johnny scurried back home like a cockroach after the presser, so you'll have to come across the Tasman and stir things up over here for a change. Shine some light on foulness.

You also featured, I might add, on ABC TV Lateline. The sound bite featured Helen's remarks to you 'in the back row'. LOL.

We can but hope Howard is toast. Kevin Rudd is a good match for him, but still a little tame for my liking. Howard plays mean & dirty and he's becoming more and more pompous with delusions of his own importance = dangerous when let out of his cage.

37. Dog whistle
The term "dog whistle" refers to a form of subliminal attempt to appeal to a racist underbelly in his domestic electorate via his criticism of an African American presidential aspirant.

That's a great term.

38. K&R! What a beautiful thing to wake up to, today!
When Bush invaded Iraq, I wondered to myself: Is our civilization over?

All the work done by millions of heroes on peace and justice, on universal education, on fairness, for a thousand years--the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, American democracy, the separation of church and state, the end of slavery, the labor movement, the defeat of Nazism, the Nuremberg trials, the Geneva Conventions, the United Nations, the '60s anti-war movement, the civil rights movement, ecumenism in religion, so much effort, courage and sacrifice, so much generosity of the human heart, so much progress...all lost to war profiteers and these ugly men, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld...

Could I be watching the end of it all--the end of everythng worthwhile in history, the end of everything I ever held dear?

Then one day I realized that it's up to me.

And you. And you.

Our civilization is not over until we say so. That's what democracy IS. That's what it means. That's who we are. That's the heart and soul of our civilization: that WE say so, that *I* say so.

And it is actions such as Athelcat's at this press conference that bring it home. It's not over until we say so. And there is a great big world out there, outside this fascist Bushite bubble in the U.S., where civilization continues, among people who will help us rebuild it here.

Thank you, Athelcat and Autorank, for bringing it home again!

39. Huzzah! And kudos to Althecat!
PM Howard:
"I think that would just encourage those who wanted completely to destabilise and destroy Iraq, and create chaos and victory for the terrorists..."

That is what the rethugs have been doing since even before the invasion.
What a pathetic weenie.

54. How about that guy althecat. Speaking truth to power without hesitation.
And Howard didn't seem to mind too much but the NZ Prime Minister wasn't going for it.

NZ is rated as the country, or one of the top ocuntries, most tolerant of a free press.
But this was a bit too real and -- oops, momentary lapse in the willingness to allow
aggressive questions. Howard's good at dishing it out, at US and Democrats and Obama,
he should have been given a chance to show how well he takes it.

The "Scoop" crew was rokken!

Good going, althecat. I can see why althegore is waiting to step into the presidential race, he can avoid the kind of orchestrated malicious malarky conducted by John and other RW goofballs.

K&R.

61. Fabulous!
So Helen believes that expecting an answer is "heckling", does she? She lives in a world all her own, the miserable ghit. If Miss Thing can't manage to answer a simple question, perhaps her talents would be better utilized as a hotel maid or working for a diaper service.

I can see how well-behaved our American press is, this brings it home. No press anywhere should be well-behaved outside of the requisite "please and thank you."

Look at where tha world is today because reporters failed to ask and demand answers.

Thanks again, althecat.

64. This is one of my all time favorite threads. Thanks to all who came & viewed!!!

This is a great story. "One of us" stood up to "one of them" and held fast.

Just a few questions, reasonable and logical, set off a protective effort as
though the "Iron Man" of Australian politics needed some serious projection.

Thanks althecat and the "Scoop" crew. You're the BEST!
