Paul Weyrich, a staunch opponent of gay rights, has sent a warning to his compatriots within the Republican Party: don’t compromise and back Giuliani for president.
Weyrich is chair of the conservative advocacy group Free Congress Foundation and says the former New York City mayor and 9/11 hero Rudolph Giuliani, who supports gay rights and has announced his candidacy, is not the kind of leader the GOP needs.
And most certainly, Weyrich said in a message on his group’s web site last month, don’t back Giuliani or Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — who voted against a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage — just because you think they can beat New York Senator and Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton in November 2008.
“Fear of Hillary is the distinguishing feature of the average and even well-educated conservative,” he lamented.
