City Lawyer Investigates Why Newsom's Paramour Got $10,000 Back Pay

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco city attorney is investigating why the woman Mayor Gavin Newsom says he had an affair with was paid more than $10,000 in sick pay to receive substance abuse treatment after she left City Hall.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera says privacy rules prevented him from disclosing why Ruby Rippey-Tourk, the mayor's former appointments secretary, retroactively received the lump sum payment for three months of leave she took last year.

Herrera said his office was reviewing Rippey-Tourk's payment history.
