White House insiders say Bush is prepared to stay the course until '09, let Dems take blame

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070216/16iraq.htm

<snip>

For his part, Bush won't back away from his insistence on "victory," and he believes he can maintain the current level of U.S. forces in Iraq through the end of his presidency in January 2009 if he thinks it's necessary, White House insiders say. They tell U.S. News that Bush is prepared to stay the course until then and let his successor figure out what to do next. He is convinced that most Democrats will realize that if they somehow succeeded in ending the war by cutting spending for it, they would be blamed for the catastrophe that Bush believes would follow–and they know Bush would argue that he could have finished the job if Democrats had only backed him.

"Besides," says another administration insider, "he has based six years of his life on this policy, and he won't admit it was a mistake. That would mean his whole presidency was a failure."

1. "his whole presidency was a failure" -- that says it all
and i'm not above taking a partial quote slightly -- only slightly -- out of context.

2. What an utter waste of a human being. It is a shame that we all
have to "trouble our beautiful minds" to process the utter ineptitude of the man. Surely, he will go down as the absolute worst president ever - a complete failure in every sense of the word. The tragedy is that this isn't a half assed baseball team - his failings impact the world, and he has the blood of countless innocent people on his hands.

22. actually, he may end up an obscure footnote
if the guys behind him succeed, they will install a real dictator and the history books will talk much more about the carnage yet to come. He'll be like Franklin Pierce, or James Buchanan, who preceded the US Civil War. Who knows anything about THEIR administrations? What we are living through now could be "the good old days" if we don't clean out the whole cabal

7. This has been the OBVIOUS plan for quite a while
As soon as they began to admit problems, they began trying to get the public to put off judgment. Six more months, six more months, all in an attempt to hang this around the neck of the Dems, because they are almost certain to carry the White House in 08 after this moron.

They seem to be doing all they can to delay trials of the illegally detained and tortured terror suspects, and they are trying to get the public to give Patraeus a chance, again to buy time.

Then, they can hang it on us.

This is just one more HUGE reason we must force them to end the war now, while it is under Bush's watch. Otherwise, the Repukes will hang this on us like they did Vietnam. This is the same cast of characters from that debacle, after all.

11. I never could have guessed.
I am shocked they would consider this, shocked.

Wasn't it obvious since November that this was their play? Run the clock, blame the dems. And our feeble leaders will sit there eating their finger tips worrying about their next move. There is only one move:

Vote No On War Appropriations

The most stubbornly pathetic excuse for a world leader operating under some semblance of a "democracy"...

Other posters here have totally nailed that scenario by which he's attempting to paint the Democrats into a corner, and now it's clear that it's his master plan.

18. A man who has been such a failure
and who is fatally flawed as Bush, cannot help but have a failed presidency. He has never achieved anything in his life that he could call his own. All of his businesses failed, and he even had to rely on his dad's enforcer, James Baker, to "win" his 2000 election. That was also facilitated by the RW Supreme Court.

The difference now is that he is bound by the terms of a president. Before, he could bug out whenever things started to fall apart. What he's doing now is to hang on until the presidential election in 2008, which is almost surely to go to the Democratic candidate, then drop this unholy mess into his successor's lap.

I wonder if Poppy Bush realizes what a horrendous mistake he made in pushing to get his son elected? I hold the elder Bush in contempt, but even at his worst, I don't think he equaled his son at his best. It will take this country a long time to recuperate from this unholy mess. Bush is not only the worst president in American history, he is the worst possible president in American history. Nobody as ignorant, arrogant, and corrupt as he could not have been elected, were it not not for his family connections.

Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 01:28 AM by GreenTea
the funding (our tax dollars) rolling in - and Syria if necessary...in two years Bush will simply walk away from it all as if it was necessary and the media will praise him as a president who stood tough against terrorism, (even though profit was the real motive)...The profits are and will continue to be made (how much has the GAO exposed so far)...Kids will continue to die.... the corporations have never cared about that, we are just the pawns, the worker's, the soldiers ...The main goal is keep the wars funded so as to continue stealing our tax dollars, steal unmetered oil, bankrupt our country (they got theirs) so liberals cant fund any of the necessary government and social programs...to the extent like we've never seen...Its all about keeping the profits rolling in. And the republicans accepting no blame. Not to mention Bush feels protected from everything being what he programed...A war time president...What sickness is this...How much is enough? As the frightened scared shitless Dems stay relatively silent, but for a tap on the hands like today...Unbelievable!

a historically right-of-center rag. What I want to know is, where's the fucking outrage on the part of all these right wingers who a few months ago had their panties in a patriotic wad about supporting the troops? Now they support getting more Americans killed so Bush doesn't have to admit he failed in Iraq? The sheer, murderous hypocrisy of these people is staggering. It STILL shocks me, even after six misbegotten years of it.

Oh, and yeah, right. You know who's going to blame the Democrats when they're finally in a position to make policy on Iraq and pull the troops out? The rightwing noisemakers, that's who. The rest of the country will experience a profound sense of relief.
