So I am standing on the sidewalk with a guy from Carlyle Group
Waiting for a a car in front of the Platinum hotel (highly recommended) in Las Vegas this morning.

Older guy comes by and sets his beautiful bag on a pedestal next to me.

No kidding, this bag was cooler than Coach.

Beautiful cotton duck trimmed with incredibly wonderful oiled leather. It was stamped "The Carlyle Group".

I ask him if he was with the Carlyle Group.

He looked down on me - which is not easy - because I am not easily looked down-upon. And said "yeah..." and walked out to the curb.

So I pulled out my fluorescent green highlighter from my case and wrote...

"FUCK ME"...

on the side of that bag. Those words glowed in the afternoon light.

He threw it over his shoulder and sallied off...not knowing what he was carrying.

I effin nailed that asshole.

One for us and all mankind!!!

Tom

I know you would never do something like that in real life, heh heh! That would be illegal and that's bad, mmm-kay?

But I am well trained.

This was no joke.

I believe in karma. But this is the Carlyle Group. I'm sure he can afford to have his case cleaned or replaced if he's above wiping it off himself. But I agree in general with you. Carlyle is iffy, though. They are not up to any good.

for a cab.

And I had nothing to do for maybe fifteen minutes.

Yeah, I thought about killing him.

I am never kidding.

It wasn't about the dismissive part.

It was all about the Carlyle part.

But I am sorry if I may have offended your sensibilities.

You can not do anything you choose not to do, Richardo.

I do what I want.

And I am the only person on the plabet to hold a Ithaca 12-guage to John Warner's sternum.

You??

71. You never saw my post about me and Warner?
Unlike the rest of the chickenshits here, I have actually taken up arms and killed a lot of people in "defense" of our country.

A lot of people (mostly Vietnamese and Laotians).

But I once had the pleasure of pointing an Ithaca 12guage pump at Mr Warner's sternum.

And I got away with it.

For he was just SecNav and I was me.

Do not deride that which you are not familiar.

Because it ain't funny.

Ya know?

I am over 50 (not exactly juvenile).

And I live in a small town (check out ZIP 94920 on demographics) and I am from Texas and I can do anything I goddamned want unless circumstance prove otherwise.

And you can take anything I say to the Bank.

So I wrote on his bag.

Big deal.

Just didn't feel like shaking his hand.

I'm over 50 too, and therefore am even more ashamed for you. Not OF you, FOR you.

And, yes I know where Tiburon is (lovely place), but I don't really believe you can do 'anything you want' there or anywhere else, except maybe Somalia.

And please don't tell anyone you're from Texas - we've got a hard enough time with the Bush's claiming residence.

Since the Prehistoric ages and the days of ancient Greece
Right down through the Middle Ages
Planet earth kept going through changes
And then no renaissance came, and times continued to change
Nothing stayed the same, but there were always renegades
Like Chief Sitting Bull, TomnTib
Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcom X
They were renegades of their time and age
So many renegad

10. That reminds me of a hilarious old Nat'l Lampoon schtick...
...from the "Radio Dinner" album.

SFX/background: trickling streams of liquid, throughout

An energetic, condescending, sophisticated-sounding young voice says (something like): "Wow. Here were are. This just goes to show what a wonderful democracy we live in. Here we are, standing side by side. I'm an up-and-coming record executive, and you're a long-haired dropout. We couldn't be more different, but here we both are... So, what I want to know is... How come your splash is so much louder than mine?"

A slightly slurred, faintly malicious voice replies: "Simple. I'm pissing on your briefcase."

God, I loved that album. I wonder if it's out on CD yet?

reminiscently,
Bright

13. I'm a newbie here...
and I am amazed at your actions and the general reaction from others here at DU. It's not like there isn't enough criticism (unjustified) of liberals not acting like "grown ups" but this just reinforces that stereotype. If the person was a woman I suppose you would have snapped her bra. Shees. It would have taken real balls to actually talk to the guy, you know, with an idea or opinion that was lucid and well argued, but I guess that would be asking for way too much. I guess my decision to join DU was ill advised since I assumed a higher level of debate. Masalama.

Welcome to DU, alofarabia, your post was very well-stated.

My recommendations for more 'serious' discussions - try the more specialized forums or the state forums. GD and GD-Politics are sure to disappoint in the maturity department.

Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 10:33 AM by Richardo
1) I was attracted to GD by another one of the many "I stuck it to a conservative" posts that, if they are not 100% bullshit, usually make the 'liberal' look worse than the conservative.

2) I pontificate in many forums. DU is my oyster.

3) I'm not spitting, I'm just questioning: Motivations, veracity, morals, like that.

but perhaps you hadn't heard ... Money Trumps Peace. Sometimes, Peace needs to raise the stakes.

IF this really did happen, the guy will have another one before he leaves his office today. And we will have paid for it many times over in blood, sweat, tears, and their lies.

IF it didn't happen, then a symbolic FU to the war profiters can't be all bad.

Stick around. Don't let one Friday night thread influence you about the work we do here as a whole. :hi:

73. So what do you think should be done with The Carlyle Group?
And I have to disagree with you about civility because it assumes that the person you are being civil to isn't actively trying to kill you. These crooks have their hands in everything dirty including the sale of nuclear technology to North Korea a few years back. These guys are also the backers of the PNAC. Do you know what PNAC is? Do you know what PNAC has done to our planet? They turned it into a tinderbox and they are running around with matches RIGHT NOW, what do you think of that?

The best thing would probably be to lock them all up and toss the key, but imprisoning someone against their will is the very hight of incivility (well short of murder, but we will leave the murdering to them) so why the high horse?

These treasonous, rat bastards have robbed our treasury, destoyed our military, disrespected our troops in the field, disrespected the WILL OF THE PEOPLE, CRAPPED all over our Constitution and continue to threaten the NATIONAL SECURITY of our country. They bring death and destruction everywhere they go. IMO, acting on a impulsive urge is a natural reaction. The guy is lucky Tom didn't deck him right on the spot. Frustration and anger makes people do some crazy things. There is no "norm" anymore. We have a president who doesn't give a rat's ass about the RULE OF LAW. You didn't say it was right, you merely laid enough cover to make it seem totally within reason that he did what he did, which was willfull destruction of personal property.

We're all stressed beyond belief by everything that has happened these last five years. That is an explanation but not an excuse for taking similar behaviour, altho on a smaller scale. There is a choice to be made everytime we are presented with these situations and there is no excuse for the one he decided upon.

3) TomInTib is intrepid: I am the only person on the planet to hold a Ithaca 12-guage to John Warner's sternum.

5) TomInTib can be dangerous: I actually thought about killing the fucker...
6) TomInTib is an avenger: So I pulled out my fluorescent green highlighter from my case and wrote... "FUCK ME"... on the side of that bag.

Beyond that, I'm not sure if I learned anything. Wait... I just thought of one more thing... TomInTib has a very high opinion of himself, that must be shared with the world.

*******QUOTE*******

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3994.htm

.... In a column posted yesterday on Salon.com, Joe Conason writes: "Preferring to avoid public scrutiny for obvious reasons, executives at the Carlyle Group usually say nothing about their firm's connections with the Bush dynasty. But last April 23, Carlyle managing director David Rubenstein spoke quite frankly about the comfy sinecure he provided to George W. Bush more than a decade ago -- and how useless Bush turned out to be. Whether he knew it or not, Rubenstein's remarks to the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association were recorded."

Rubenstein said, "We put (Bush) on the board and (he) spent three years. Came to all the meetings. Told a lot of jokes. Not that many clean ones. And after a while I kind of said to him, after about three years - you know, I'm not sure this is really for you. Maybe you should do something else. Because I don't think you're adding that much value to the board. You don't know that much about the company.

Rubenstein continued: "He said, 'Well, I think I'm getting out of this business anyway. And I don't really like it that much. So I'm probably going to resign from the board.' And I said, thanks - didn't think I'd ever see him again. His name is George W. Bush. He became President of the United States. So you know if you said to me, name 25 million people who would maybe be President of the United States, he wouldn't have been in that category. So you never know. Anyway, I haven't been invited to the White House for any things." ....

Do they still allow them on airplanes? I wonder.

Reminds me of an urge I had that I didn't indulge shortly after the '04 election theft.

I was at the drive through at the bank and ya know when you're staring at something but your thoughts are altogether elsewhere. . .?

Waiting for the teller to process my transaction, I was staring at the drawer in an unfocused manner when all of a sudden, my focus sharpened on the drawer's logo. . .duh. . .duh. . .duh. . .It read "DIEBOLD."

I wanted to graffitize it and write "steals elections" Of course, one is always under surveillance cameras around banks and it would qualify as desicration of property.

I later thought it would be cool to have a massive campaign of writing "steals elections" on masking tape and afixing it on "DIEBOLD" logos around the country.

Love what you did Tom. You must be really spry and quick on your feet.

I think it is, in a way, civil disobedience....non-violent protest. After all, the Carlyle Group does partly control this government, is a part of the military/govt/complex, so why not demonstrate against it in a non-physical way? SINCE THE 60'S, PROTESTORS HAVE BEEN USING CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AND NON-VIOLENT PROTEST to, well, protest.

I applaud your protest of the military/govt complex.

I carry a black marker and when I see a Hummer parked on the street, with any bumper sticker, I write on the sticker (not on the vehicle)...."This vehicle supports terrorism." During the election, I put a black cross thru all the bush/cheney stickers I saw.

I don't care what you say, I think demonstrations against the corrupt administration are necessary and should be applauded.

I think his "reason" was righteous. Your argument would have been used by the whites in the South against the Blacks who participated in sit-downs at privately owned lunch counters to bring attention to segregated eating established.

"no reason at all" is in the eye of the beholder. Our eyes differ. IMHO

were not targeting the individual owners of the lunch counters specifically. They did not set out nor did they purposely perform acts of individual vandalism. There may have been individuals who did so like the OP but they were not condoned by the leaders of the movement.

The father of nonviolent protest, Gandhi, and his apt pupil, MLK, would never have condoned destructive acts. I would urge anyone who thinks so to really look into what nonviolent protest and civil disobedience really are and how they are conducted. Nonviolent protest is a tool to bring about change of heart and mind, not a weapon of anger.

"were not targeting the individual owners of the lunch counters specifically. They did not set out nor did they purposely perform acts of individual vandalism"

Many of the sit-ins did target individual owners specifically...to force them to reverse their whites-only policy. I saw them personally do this. It was said they were performing acts of vandalism/illegality because they were blocking paying customers and preventing owners from making money, which, owners said, they had a right to do. Until the owners (Carlyle guy) change their policies, then the protestors had a moral right to do what they did. I still think writing on the guys case was a moral decision to protest, and agree with it.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Respectfully, you are not the know-all and be-all of what is appropriate non-violent protest actions. Your know-it-all attitude is mildly annoying. People can disagree on what constitutes what without you asserting that you are the final "decider?" You call it what you want, and I'll call it what I want.

And the only reason I'm

situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said

Ask him why he works for such a nefarious warmongering company. Tell him if he had any self-respect, he would get a real job and a real life. It's not against the law to call an asshole an asshole, in so many words. I think people should be more candid with these SOBs. Why resort to school yard pranks?

I know. It feels good. But the dick will have a brand new case overnighted.

Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 02:04 PM by Downtown Hound
A little protest vandalism is nothing compared to the devastation that The Carlyle Group has wrought upon the Earth.

But hey, I'm sure all the Iraqis that have been butchered will feel better knowing that no matter what, Americans won't even resort to a misdemeanor to protest their suffering, because it's just plain wrong gosh dang it! Oh yeah, and that whole strip our nation of its civil liberties thing? Forget it, whatever you do, don't even think about resorting to a little graffiti because gasp, it's a crime. It's a terrible crime to make a rich man who's money came from the blood and oppression of others have to buy a new bag. You have idea how much he probably suffered because of that action.

Thank God the American colonists never did anything against Britain that could be construed as offensive, over the top, or destructive. No, they just went along their way, and golly gee, you know what happened? Britain just gave the colonists their independence! Yeppers! No one ever had to risk their life, their livelihood, or even, gasp, a little jail time and a fine.

We should never, ever, do anything risque or aggressive when attempting to convey the message that murdering 650,000 of our fellow human beings is wrong. Just smile and be on our way, and make sure to buy lots of cool stuff from Wal Mart! And politely disagree whenever you can.

:sarcasm:

Oh and on edit: TominTib, :yourock:

Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 02:34 PM by Downtown Hound
to another act of vandalism done in protest, in an attempt to show that it is a legitimate act.. Actually in my opinion, TominTib was more justified in doing what he did than the colonists did. Those colonists were protesting some tea tax, and we laud them as heroes.

TominTib was protesting the murder of 650,000 people, and yet you guys are jumping on him for being too aggressive and destructive. You really think the line is so different between the two? The basic idea behind it is the same.

So yeah, you heard that right.

People who look down their noses at the hoi polloi are one of my pet peeves -- glad you got him back.

Illegal, illschmeagle -- sometimes a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. Anyone ever hear of civil disobedience? The guy will know who did it -- the question is, did he get a good enough look at you with his big fat nose in the way as he peered down it? My guess is no, he did not. So he'll just have to suck it up.

And yes, the guy can undoubtedly afford to replace his cool Carlyle bag.

Heh.
