WOW...Murtha to Introduce Legislation to FORCE TROOPS HOME!!
TRUTHOUT cited this article first:
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021707Z.shtml

By mid-March, Murtha will offer legislation that he says would set such stringent rules on combat deployments that Bush would have no choice but to begin bringing troops home.

His legislation would dictate how long troops can stay, the equipment they use and whether any money could be spent to expand military operations into Iran. Murtha says few units could meet the high standards he envisions, meaning Bush's plan to keep some 160,000 troops in Iraq for months on end would be thwarted.

Under his plan, he says, Democrats would be helping and not hurting troops by making sure they have what they need before being thrown into combat.

1. I watched a segment about this on KO last night. Murtha supports
the troops! His legislation supports the troops! He's ex-military and he's got a good working relationship with current military personnel. Those who "support the troops" have no reason to reject this legislation...unless their support of the troops is only empty rhetoric for show - cowardly chicken-hawk bastards.

Thank you Congressman Murtha.

"WE MUST ALL MAKE SACRIFICES TO PROTECT FREEDOM, EVEN THE TROOPS!!!!"

All except THEM of course: they won't even do a 5 day work week.

5. Stephanie Miller and Ed Schulz and Randi Rhodes
have all been talking about it. Steph gave Murtha the "Let's Hear It For the Boy" tribute. I'm hoping the text of it is at Murtha's website--I want to be able to show it to freepers and ask them if they support it--and if not, why.

8. Not gonna happen
Reid and Pelosi will do everything they can to stop this. Way too much money to be made, and they just got their fingers in the pie.

9. This is the legislation that can stop this
and it's coming from the very BEST author. How can they vote against this combat seasoned, military man? I love the Honorable John Murtha.

<snip>
Part kindly Irish Catholic grandfather and part political pit bull with two Purple Hearts in his pocket, Murtha seems the Democrats’ best chance of using the budget to curtail the war without appearing to be leaving troops in the lurch.

That's why I love him so much, he reminds me of my beloved Irish Catholic grandfather.

13. And what happens when Bush signs it, issues a Signing Statement
Edited on Sat Feb-17-07 03:48 PM by Morgana LaFey
and then gleefully goes on to do what he damn well pleases?

I'd feel a lot better if I saw ANY evidence that anyone in Washington aside from a Conyers and a Waxman and perhaps a Waters actually understood what sick, criminal, arrogant, dictatorially-bent people they're dealing with.

17. Am I being too hopeful here? Does all legislation have to go through both
House and Senate with separate versions and then details "hammered out" in committee? I have read that the House controls the funds for the war and I take that to mean by itself, i.e. Appropriations Committee.

18. Sweet!
Forcing them to spend money on proper equipment, forcing an end to these rapid rotations, and at the same time blocking a shot at Iran and bringing units home. Excellent!

19. I'll believe it when I see it
Edited on Sun Feb-18-07 07:59 AM by RestoreGore
because at this point I do not believe ANY of them in Congress are living in reality when it comes to who they are dealing with. And of course, this is just another dance in the lead up to 2008 because that is ALL any of this is really about now. People continue to die while members of Congress write "legislation" to get their names in the paper. So again, I'll believe it when I see it.

24. I Love John Murtha!
I am so glad that he in in the House.

He is a person with guts -- guts to speak the truth to power, and guts to do the right thing!

I hope he is successful in his effort to get the troops home -- by any means necessary!
