Indian athletes experience racism on the road
in the land of cheney we find an enlightened lot... be sure to read the reader's comments after the article where many acknowledge that yes, they might be racist, but have you ever seen the racism on the rez? they just don't get it. don't even begin to get it. the fact there's a rez that's steeped in some of the worst poverty in the nation simply doesn't register.

Indian athletes experience racism on the road

Some incidents are clearly improper, others ambiguous

By The Associated Press
CASPER - James Blare wasn't upset.

The head football coach at Wyoming Indian, Blare didn't expect his Chiefs to actually compete with Mountain View. The Chiefs were in the middle of an 0-8 2005 season, while the Buffaloes are a traditional Class 3A power.

"It was one of the funnest games we've ever had," Blare said of his team's trip to Mountain View. "We got smoked 55-0, but they treated our kids great."

But as the Chiefs were leaving a restaurant after their postgame meal, someone in a passing car rolled down the window and shouted: "Go back to the rez!"

1. That's precisely what black athletes used to face everywhere. Horrible. Wyoming should put some
effort into educating their people about whose land they're living on.

2. That is sick. The Indians were here first and were massacred by the
so-called civilized intruders. I am embarrassed daily to be am American; we are so brainwashed, uncultured, bigoted and parochial.

4. I am of Native extraction and have found sometimes
the insults go both ways - particularly when it comes to sports activities.

5. SueAnne Big Crow
"SueAnne Big Crow stood outside the gymnasium at Lead, South Dakota, and heard the taunts and war whoops of the hostile crowd. Her teammates were stunned and hurt. The senior, who was supposed to lead the team in their warmup drills, did not want to go on the court. Although only a 9th grader, Big Crow offered to go first. As she ran out onto the court with the basketball, th hostile whooping grew louder. At center court, Big Crow stopped, tossed the ball to a teammate and took off her warmup jacket. She wrapped it around her shoulders and began the Lakota shawl dance. The gym fell silent except for the sounds of her chanting. Then she took the ball, sprinted around the court and as the crowd applauded wildly, laid the ball in the basket. Bolstered by the courage of their young teammate, the Lady Thorpes won the game easily."
