Bill to Curb Alternative Tax Stalls in Senate

~snip~WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 — A bill that would protect millions of middle-class taxpayers from being hit with a surprise tax increase over the next several months stalled in the Senate today, creating more confusion as filing season approaches.

The bill, intended to stop the alternative minimum tax from ensnaring more and more Americans, was supported by only 46 senators — 14 short of the 60 needed to shut off debate and move to a vote on the bill itself.

What happens next is not clear. There may be more debate, but time is limited because the lawmakers will soon adjourn for the holidays. And the computers of the Internal Revenue Service must be programmed to take the alternative minimum tax into consideration.

Can't say I'm not surprised. Now, we just need * to veto it once it's finally approved. As I recall, it was held up by Repubs for some reason - can't remember exactly what. Can someone help me out here?
