Another WaPo Democrat Hit Piece
Hoyer Is Proof of Earmarks' Endurance

Even as House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer has joined in steps to clean up pork-barrel spending, the Maryland congressman has tucked $96 million worth of pet projects into next year's federal budget, including $450,000 for a campaign donor's foundation.

Hoyer (D) is one of the top 10 earmarkers in the House for 2008, based on budget requests in bills so far, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, an independent watchdog group.

2. Why did they concentrate just on Hoyer?
WP should had done an analysis by political party, by state, by type of funding, by member.

3. Exactly. WaPo is becoming as transparent as the Washington Times.
Their editors are pathetically bad. The "torture brief" story would never have been published with an editor like Ben Bradlee.

4. Isn't Hoyer the Whip?
Of all people he should be the one absolutely to not have earmarks...IMO he is as bad as those he replaced..

5. You're right; I'm just so disgusted with
Hoyer and the party in general I didn't see the forest for the trees.

Since assuming control of Congress, Democrats have taken some important steps to clean up the practice, watchdog groups say. Lawmakers are now required to disclose their earmarks. And House and Senate leaders have agreed to cut earmark spending by 40 percent in the 2008 budget bills, most of which are being wrapped into a giant package to be presented this week.

6. Hoyer Is One Of The Bigger Problems
Many of the criticisms leveled at Nancy Pelosi should be aimed right here. He's the Majority Leader and works behind the scenes with the "live-along, get-along" factions. He's put the kabosh on impeachment and plays gatekeeper on a lot of key legislation...and, of course, earmarks.

If it's true, it's not a hit piece.

8. Wasn't this a reason Hoyer's backers for the Majority Leader position trashed Murtha, the anti-war
candidated and Pelosi's choice for the position?
