Cleaning Solvent Spills into San Francisco Bay
Written by Elizabeth Bishop, Senior Internet News Producer
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Authorities say an unknown amount of cleaning solvent has spilled into San Francisco Bay following a fire at an Oakland warehouse.
The Coast Guard says the chemicals spilled into storm drains that empty directly into San Francisco Bay.
The incident follows last month's oil spill, which killed thousands of birds and fouled miles of coastline. Experts say it could take years for the Bay ecosystem to recover from that event.
The fire was a single-alarm blaze at an industrial warehouse in East Oakland, about a mile from the bay. No one was injured.
