'CRITICAL SECURITY FAILURES': OHIO SEC. OF STATE RECOMMENDS BAN OF TOUCH-SCREEN VOTING MACHINES
'CRITICAL SECURITY FAILURES' LEADS OHIO SEC. OF STATE TO RECOMMEND BAN OF DRE (TOUCH-SCREEN) VOTING MACHINES
Result of State's First Ever Testing of E-Voting Systems Find All Systems 'Vulnerable' to Manipulation and Theft by 'Simple Techniques'

SoS Brunner Recommends Paper Ballots Optically-Scanned at County Headquarters for Buckeye State...

The results of new, unprecedented testing of e-voting machines in the state of Ohio are in, and the findings mirror the landmark results of a similar test carried out earlier this year in California.
"Ohio's electronic voting systems have 'critical security failures' which could impact the integrity of elections in the Buckeye State," says Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner in a statement which accompanied the release of the report today on the SoS' website.

Brunner is calling for a ban on all Direct Recording Electronic (DRE, usually touch-screen) voting systems in the state, along with a ban on precinct-based optical-scan paper based systems, charging that the central counting of ballots at the county would eliminate "points of entry creating unnecessary voting system risk."

The State's bi-partisan "Evaluation & Validation of Election-Related Equipment, Standards & Testing" (EVEREST) report finds, as did California's study, as did virtually every other independent test of such systems, that violating the security and manipulating the "federal approved" electronic voting systems, is a breeze.

"To put it in every-day terms," Brunner said, "the tools needed to compromise an accurate vote count could be as simple as tampering with the paper audit trail connector or using a magnet and a personal digital assistant."

While the effort is long overdue in Ohio, actions being taken by Brunner, in light of the test results, are less stringent than those taken by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen after tests in her state. Brunner's recommendations, some of them quite puzzling, are likely to come under some fire in the bargain, from Election Integrity advocates in Ohio and elsewhere...

14. What is up w Tokaji (OSU):
But Dan Tokaji, an Ohio State University associate law professor and elections expert, said Brunner's proposals are not justified and would cause more problems than they attempt to solve.

22. I don't know.
I have guesses but as far as facts I don't know. OSU's Moritz College of Law
has always been the republican "firewall" against charges of stolen elections.

13. No...

Paper BALLOT voting must occur immediately.

And while the test was "good", Brunner's recommendations for CENTRAL BASED op-scan is not, versus precinct-based. Especially in Ohio. :-(

11. "Could recommendations lead to more trouble?" --more from Brad. Very troubling.
Me: Brunner wants to centralize the vote counting in the countiesAnd my, on central electronic tabulators which ALSO contain 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations. Central tabulators is where I think much of the fraud, nationwide in 2004, took place.

Touchscreens are like torture and illegal, heinous war, and no-bid military contracts to Bush cronies. The fascists assert the worst, more horrible things they can get away with, then the 'Democrats' look like "liberals" for taking what, on a real political spectrum, would be a rightwing position: In the matter of the above issues, for instance, Democrats okay MIND-BOGGLINGLY BIG military expenditures, most of it to private contractors, and unnecessry for our "defense," as long as the contracting is cleaner. The position that we should cut the war budget by 90%, to a true defensive posture (no more wars to choice!), is 'OFF THE TABLE.' Or, don't torture prisoners (or don't get caught), but detention without trial is okay.

And in the case of our election system, it's okay for rightwing corporations to be running our election system with 'TRADE SECRET' code, and okay to keep larding them with billions of taxpayer dollars to steal our elections, as long as we get rid of these bad-old touchscreens.

THIS is the peril of Brunner's current recommendations. Getting rid of touchscreens is not enough. We must get rid to ALL TRADE SECRET CODE in the counting of our votes. And my person opinion is that we should de-charter these electronic voting corporations, and investigate and prosecute them for fraud, and for their dreadful assault on our democracy.

Bradblog:

Could New Recommendations Lead to Still More Trouble?

Brunner's recommendation, and failure to decertify the most dangerous of the voting systems, could lead to even more trouble ahead for Ohio.

Voting system and security experts have previously argued that decentralized precinct-based counting was more secure than central, county-based counting since results could be both counted, and posted at the polling place on election night, prior to transport of ballots, and vulnerable recording media to county offices.

During the 2004 election, investigators have maintained, chicanery occurred at the county level on election night. One such now-infamous incident occurred in Warren County, one of the last to announce results for the November 2004 election, when a supposed terrorist threat led county officials to shut the public and media out of the counting room. The unprecedented action still remains unexplained to this day. Nobody at either the FBI or Dept. of Homeland Security has admitted to giving such a warning to Warren County, and the officials in Warren who claimed they did have never offered the names of any such individuals.

Neither Brunner nor Dann have investigated the disturbing allegations surrounding that incident either, to our knowledge.

Central tabulators which process paper-based optical-scan ballots are notoriously vulnerable to hacking as well. Though, in theory, proper audits of paper ballots might reveal tampering in the event that a tabulator is hacked, decentralized counting and posting of results is generally acknowledged by experts to make such tampering far more difficult to accomplish without detection.

Brunner's statement admits that "the researchers commented that with the lack of technical measures in voting system design, its integrity 'is provided purely by the integrity and honesty of election officials.'" Such officials would still be responsible for overseeing all tabulation at the county level under Brunner's new recommendations.

A recent report from Houston, earlier this month, highlighted the ease by which a single individual could change the results for an entire county election with just the push of a few keystrokes on a county-based central tabulator. (MORE)

17. NYT: Ohio elections Official Calls Machines Flawed
Ohio Elections Official Calls Machines Flawed

By BOB DRIEHAUS
Published: December 15, 2007
CINCINNATI — All five voting systems used in Ohio, a state whose electoral votes narrowly swung two elections toward President Bush, have critical flaws that could undermine the integrity of the 2008 general election, a report commissioned by the state’s top elections official has found.

“It was worse than I anticipated,” the official, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, said of the report. “I had hoped that perhaps one system would test superior to the others.”

At polling stations, teams working on the study were able to pick locks to access memory cards and use hand-held devices to plug false vote counts into machines. At boards of election, they were able to introduce malignant software into servers.

Ms. Brunner proposed replacing all of the state’s voting machines, including the touch-screen ones used in more than 50 of Ohio’s 88 counties. She wants all counties to use optical scan machines that read and electronically record paper ballots that are filled in manually by voters.

18. could impact?
"Ohio's electronic voting systems have 'critical security failures' which could impact the integrity of elections in the Buckeye State," says Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner in a statement which accompanied the release of the report today on the SoS' website.

We now see that a cabal that would steal Ohio had the means, motive, and opportunity.

Could impact? Has impacted.

19. NOW they're concerned -- typical
NOW they're concerned, when Democrats are set to sweep elections across the board.

They realize it's not possible, with so many citizens disaffected with the the 'puke party, to change the vote enough (without many noticing their vote was usurped, of course) to ensure yet another fraudulent Reprofitcan win but the real danger to them is the Democrats gaining access and control over election districts to affect future outcomes of elections after the memory and distaste of Repederast wrongdoings has dissipated --oh, about 8-9 years or so--

so surprise, surprise... NOW they're "concerned".

To them, if they've done it therefore *everyone* will be as amoral.

Oh... and when the Democrats gain all their previously held seats, tabulators will be included in their new-found list of things to be 'deeply worried' about.

Watch. Once they rise to supremacy again 5 will get you 10 that these proprietary, secret, vulnerable to (deliberate) contamination faults that oh-so-suddenly are giving them so many "concerns" will be A-OK again and let the cycle --or preferably their next planned 1000-year-reich-- begin.

What worked for them once, ya know...
Fugging disgusting, but that's how these conscienceless criminals think.
Sorry to be so negative, but I don't trust those evil bastards one iota and never will again. With all the crimes that party has committed and lied about, they should have been disbanded long agoe (but THANKS Clear Channel et. al., Limbaugh et. al. and "Liberal Media" in general!) and the name of Lincoln's beloved party retired in perpetual disgrace.
But then they'd just reform under some other name and the damage, and countless crimes, are already done... may as well keep 'Republican', with all its well-but-sadly earned connotations.

Sorry 'Honest' Abe :(
