What Would Jesus Buy?
From producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and director Rob VanAlkemade, “What Would Jesus Buy?” examines the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands - Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement. Rev. Billy’s epic journey takes us to chilling exorcisms at Wal-Mart headquarters, to retail interventions at the Mall of America, and all the way to the Promised Land on Christmas Day. The Stop Shopping mission reminds us that even though we may be “hypnotized and consumerized,” we still have a chance to save ourselves this Christmas.

6. I think Jesus would buy one of those singing bass
That and a few loaves of bread and he could make enough paninis to feed everyone at the Superbowl. After all, we know Jesus loves football and he does take sides.

2. It's about time!
This is a great message.

How many people over extend themselves financially
and go into debt just to buy expensive Christmas gifts?

Thanks for posting this!

:-)

8. The movie gives statistics that make you ill
60% of Americans owe over $15K in credit card debt. That just blows me away.

5. That looks excellent, I want to see it really bad now...
But of course it is not playing anywhere in my area. Dammit they need to bring this movie to Minnesota.

10. It is excellent
Watch Google video. A lot of great documentaries are posted there soon after they are in the theaters. That's how I saw Jesus Camp, another must see documentary.

7. My Seventh-Day Adventist uncle says buying gifts is paganism
That it really has nothing to do with Santa or the Three Wise Men, but instead goes back to pagan rituals of buying gifts for one's lovers at the solstice. I wonder if that's the real reason you see so many fundies opposed to gift-giving at christmas?

Anyways, hearing this made me actually feel better about giving gifts to my friends. Anything to stick it to the fundies!

9. If I had any fundie friends,
I would donate to homeless shelters and food pantries in their names for Christmas.

My friends who are war supporters are receiving thank you cards for donations to this worthy project:
