Obama: Tanner Should Have Been Fired, Not Moved
By Paul Kiel - December 14, 2007, 5:44PM
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), who called on Justice Department officials to fire John Tanner back in October, has a glass-half-empty view of Tanner's resignation. A statement just out:

"It's unacceptable that the Administration is simply shuffling deck chairs by moving Mr. Tanner to another important position in the Justice Department. During his tenure, he made offensive, intolerant comments about minorities in an attempt to defend voter identification laws that threaten voting rights, and that's why I called on him to be fired. It's time we restore confidence in the Department by appointing public servants who are truly committed to upholding our civil rights."

1. Here's background on the despicable John Tanner:
Voting Chief Tanner Resigns
By Paul Kiel - December 14, 2007, 11:43AM
Today, John Tanner resigned from his position effective immediately as chief of the Civil Rights Division's voting section. His resignation email, with the subject line "Moving On" was sent out at approximately 11 AM to voting section staff. He said that he will be moving on to the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices. The email is reproduced below in full.

With Tanner, it had seemed like a matter of not if, but when. As we reported late last month, his travel habits had angered attorneys in the voting section, leading to an investigation by the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility.

And that was after his comments about the tendency of minorities to "die first" led Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and others to call for his removal. When he went before the House Judiciary Committee in October, he was lambasted for his tendency of "basing your conclusions on stereotypes" (like, say, claiming that African-Americans have IDs more than whites because they're always going to cash-checking businesses).

But most of all, Tanner's reign is notable for his collusion with the political appointees who oversaw the section, an ongoing effort to reverse the Civil Rights Division's traditional role in protecting minority voters, particularly African-Americans, into one of aiding thinly disguised vote suppression measures (most infamously Georgia's voter ID law). It was an effort that some career DoJ attorneys later described as "institutional sabotage."

Who'll be taking over? We've got a question into DoJ to see.

2. And the reason for that is that there is still discrimination within banking
practises.. Minorities often have less credit cards or are completely denied... I think there is a factor in their credit scores that marginalizes a person of minority, especially black peoples. So, instead of white people, sliding the charge card, the miniority person goes to cash advance and pays an exorbitant amount for borrowing the money so they can pay that light bill and put some food on the table. Just a different way of having to borrow just to live. It all sucks and its all predatory, and apparently Fucker Carlson cannot understand why there has to be oversight in the banking industry on a whole... On a side note, when my parents first had c.c., the payment due date meant that the check had to be written by the due date and post marked before the close of that day, otherwise it was considered late.. then it switched to late if received after due date.. oops the mail was late due to that big storm in the North East.. oh well, here's your late fee. Another thing, mortgages used to have a grace period.. Pay by this date.. If its after this date its late, add x amount to the check for being late... My mortgage is due on the date, no grace period and with an automatic late fee assessment added to the next payment... I have to go thru the fine details.. there might be something in there, that if I am late, my rate can be re-evaluated and increased to reflect my credit.. Its supposed to be fixed... but there are all these fined details these days. So, I have all my bills to be paid set up to come directly out of my checking account electronically.. that way I don't have to worry about what day these asshats will get the check and post it..... they changed that law about post-dating a check (of course for regular joe-shmoe.. you still have to wait to cash or deposit checks written to you until the post date). Anyway.. if the company receives the check a couple of days early, and you needed to make sure that your check was deposited the day before the money was due, you could go out... It happened to me once. And my bank said post-dating a check doesn't work for you... So, they pulled money out of my savings to cover it as an overdraft protection and charged me $30.00 to do the transfer of funds. It is truly amazing how fraudulent the banking system is.. And then there's bank of America, my fav., who decided to round everything up or down--and the consumer save's money... Well, many statiticians have run the numbers with tax included.. it is beneficial to them, not the consumers.. the bank will make anywhere from 1 to 49 cents for most purchases you make.. and we all know the stories of the boss who skims the penny off the top of every transaction making off with millions in the end. They are litterly making free money ripping off their customers who use their banking services.
