Denver Named Nation's 'Drunkest City'
Denver Named Nation's 'Drunkest City'
Colorado, Texas Rank High On Magazine's List

Colorado and Texas residents may like their drink a little too much.

That's at least according to a study conducted by Men's Health magazine to determine the nation's most dangerously drunk cities.

Topping the list as the nation's "Drunkest City," according to the study, was Denver. Fellow Colorado communities Colorado Springs and Aurora rated third and 19th respectively. Denver was rated the most dangerously drunk city in 2006 as well.

Meanwhile, Texas joined Colorado as the only state with more than one city falling in the "top" 10 on the list, with San Antonio ranking sixth, Austin coming in seventh and Lubbock in the ninth spot.

Other communities making the top 10 list included second-ranked Anchorage, Alaska, fourth-ranked Omaha, Neb., fifth-ranked Fargo, N.D., eighth-ranked Fresno, Calif., and 10th-ranked Milwaukee, Wis.

1. It's the high altitude, probably.

I imagine it would have an effect on how quickly alcohol is absorbed by the blood.

12. Yep.
We used to keep an eye out for obviously tourist women in the bars.

I could go on and on, but it wouldn't be polite.

19. OK, here's the deal...
I won't tell anyone if you won't.

If my crazy ex-GF catches wind of this, I will never hear the last of it.

Speaking of same, never attempt to lead a normal existence while living under the same roof with a Crazy Ex-Lover.

3. Well, well-- aren't we proud...
Although perhaps a bit of fallacy exists in basing the ratings largely on drunk driving arrests. That means those cities that crack down hard, will be elevated. Somehow I find it hard to believe Denver is worse, than say, Albuquerque on a per capita basis...

5. It surprises me that Denver beat out Anchorage...
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 02:52 PM by Blue_In_AK
This is a very, very drunk city, but I think we share that distinction with a lot of northern places.

ed. Drinking and driving is such an issue up here that the Troopers have taken to airing barbershop quartet style PSAs to the tune of Christmas songs, that are really hilarious. Instead of "Santa Claus is coming to town," it's "Drunk drivers are going to jail."

7. If you missed it in my edit,
I posted a link to the "Drunk Drivers Are Going to Jail" song. It cracks me up every time I hear it. They sound so cheery about it. Too bad they don't include the video with the link.

15. Law enforcement has cracked down quite a bit
since those Wild West days. Not only are APD and the Troopers out in force on all the holidays, but the law has been tightened up quite a bit. Now you can't even be sitting in an idling car by the side of the road or even in your driveway if you've been drinking. It really has been a serious problem here, so I have no problem with the enforcement, even if it sometimes seems Draconian.

8. Why are there so many drunks in Denver? Answer: Applejack
Edited on Sat Dec-15-07 02:58 PM by Kucinich4America
It's like the Costco of alcohol! Took me a half hour just to browse the beer cooler alone (which took up one entire wall of the store)

Technically it's in Wheat Ridge as opposed to Denver proper (don't know if there are other locations) but with that selection, they probably get a lot of crosstown traffic (to quote Mr. Hendrix)

13. Did anyone tell Howard Dean?
That's where the DNC is having the nominating convention next year.
Looks like it may get more lively than so far predicted.

By the way, the Dallas area lodges a very vocal protest about the
reliability of the findings.......

A lot of the delegates, and the good doctor himself may need several drinks just to get through it. :evilfrown:

18. I've never seen Howard rip-roaring drunk ever, but
If the party tears itself up like it does here on DU, and we
lose a Presidency the Republicans handed to us on a silver platter,
I wouldn't blame him. As a matter of fact I might join him, and I don't
drink alcohol at all.

23. Impossible. New Orleans wins by a HUGH1 margin over ALL CITIES IN THE USA combined.
... according to ME! :D

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/02/02/mardigras_narrowweb__300x460,0.jpg

We have hundreds of bars open 24/7, and DRIVE THRU DAIQUIRI stores!!!

Hard liquor can be bought at most filling stations 24/7.

New Orleans = alcohol 24/7... non-stop drinking, day and night.... sex, drugs, music and food, all day and all night.

We chew up and spit out fundies who comes here to proselytize... makes me proud.
