A glimpse of Lincoln at Gettysburg?
Discovery of rare photos electrifies gathering in Pennsylvania

The discovery of two photographs believed to be of President Abraham Lincoln in profile was presented last month at a very appropriate event, the Lincoln Forum in Gettysburg, Pa., where scholars and students of the 16th president gather each November to discuss new works and discoveries about the man.
Although not everyone was convinced, many were willing to say the two successive images most likely included the president as he was arriving at the stage to deliver the Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1863.
The finding is an extraordinary event. There are only about 125 known photographs of Lincoln.
"A new photograph of Lincoln is very precious and very rare," said Harold Holzer, vice chairman of the forum and a leading authority on Lincoln. "In all probability, this is a Lincoln image, but you just want to yell, 'Turn around!' so we could see his full face."
John Richter and Bob Zeller, officers of the nonprofit Center for Civil War Photography, included the discovery in a dramatic presentation of a series of stereographs on Lincoln and the Civil War.

1. Obviously a forgery
This penny clearly shows that he was facing the other direction.

But if it's real... what an incredible find!

2. Could be
Lincoln was usually taller than others when he was standing. I know that there is one photo of him reading the speech, and he wasn't wearing his hat at that time. But going and coming, he would. I've used a steroptigon (that's what my grandmother called it) and it is neat to see things in 3D. The discoverers get no money for finding the photo--they did it for love of research only. You can see them for free at the Library of Congress or at this site:

The photos and the enhanced photos are at the end of this file.

3. Wonder what Lincoln would have to say if he knew what his party has
come to?

5. Hey, that's a big PDF file, not a web page
Not fair, I expected a web page and got a big PDF file instead. Scared me to death, thought I'd gotten a trojan or really bad web site.

Please, in the future (or even now with an edit) state that the link is to a PDF and not a web site. Or better yet link to the page that has the PDF or other download so there is some real warning about where the darn thing is coming from.

8. A great find
if it is indeed real. I love this stuff---makes me think of what other lost treasures are lurking in mildewed attic crawlspaces or warehouses like the one at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I remember a story a few years back where a guy bought a box of old papers and documents from a yard sale, and discovered handwritten pages of Edgar Allan Poe story fragments and articles. My dad's friend Oscar pulled a rolled-up moldy leather object out of a yard sale for less than a buck and wound up restoring a vintage duster-style motorcycle coat

I myself found an unfinished Edgar Rice Burroughs manuscript tucked away in Burroughs' files in Tarzana, CA and edited it for publication with Dark Horse Comics: Minidoka

History is all around us, and objects that have stood the test of time deserve our care and attention.

whether this Lincoln photo is real or forged, I'm grateful that it brought up the subject.

I'm off to the attic.
