14 states reject funding for abstinence-only programs.

As evidence mounts that abstinence-only sex ed programs are ineffective, the number of states refusing federal money for these programs has “jumped sharply in the past year.” The Washington Post reports:

At least 14 states have either notified the federal government that they will no longer be requesting the funds or are not expected to apply, forgoing more than $15 million of the $50 million available, officials said. {…}

Until this year, only four states had passed up the funding.

“We’re concerned about this,” said Stan Koutstaal of the Department of Health and Human Services, which runs the program. “My greatest concern about states dropping out is that these are valuable services and programs. It’s the youths in these states who are missing out.“

8. You forgot "ignorance". Some people don't want the teens to have
sex ed info even though they know it will help them with their family planning as adults.

4. Anybody got a list of the smart states?
Couldn't find them listed in the link or in the post article. I think i could probably name most of them but I'd like to see if my guess is correct.

7. Here are the eight of the fourtheen states...
...that are mentioned in the article as dropping out:

Virginia
Ohio
Washington
California,
Maine
New Jersey
Colorado
Illinois

Also from the article:

"The number of states spurning the money has grown even as Congress considers boosting overall funding for abstinence-only education to $204 million, with most of it going directly to community organizations."

Those who are concerned about this aren't these so-called "community organizations", but the churches. They set up these cover organizations to tell lies to many young women about the effects of birth control pills, about abortions and about just having sex before marriage. These are doctrinal positions, not science. There never should have been any funding for this bullshit. If the religionists wish to promote their beliefs, let fund it themselves. But not with my tax dollars....

9. Score one for common sense
Any abstinence-only sex-ed program is destined to fail. No amount of religious dogma forced into public education can fight the biological impulses of adolescence. A few dollars for a box of rubbers is a hell of a lot cheaper than the alternative. Jeez, you would think the people who came up with this stuff were never teenagers themselves.
