Hoekstra says Congress will defy DoJ on CIA tapes
By Klaus Marre | Posted: 12/16/07 12:09 PM
December 16, 2007

The ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee said Sunday that the panel would defy the Department of Justice (DoJ) and pursue an investigation into the destruction of CIA tapes that show the interrogation of suspected terrorists.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) said the panel would not stand down.

“I think we will issue subpoenas,” Hoekstra said on Fox News Sunday. “And once these witness appear in front of the committee, then I think we’ll have to make the decision as to whether we’re going to provide them with immunity or not. But our investigation should move forward.”

The lawmaker added that Congress needs to hold the CIA accountable “because they did not respond and they did not perform the way we expected them to.”

“If they had done what they are supposed to do on the tapes -- keep us informed, listen to the kind of recommendations that my colleague {Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.)} made to them -- we wouldn’t even be having this discussion today.”

Harman, formerly the top Democrat on the Intelligence panel, said that there have been parallel investigations in the past and she also supports a congressionally inquiry.

“It smells like the cover-up of the cover-up,” said Harman, who had urged the CIA not to destroy the tapes.

1. Quick question for DU debunkers: was it ever figured out if Silvestre Reyes
has a relationship to Jose Rodriguez or not? I went on tilt before that was decided.

4. That was another ratfu**ker dirty trick and totally false, BUT
Reyes gave him an award in El Paso, praising him, and calling McConnell his new friend .....

FROM: Who is Jose A. Rodriguez? CIA Operative has Lawyered Up = Torture Evidence Destroyed.

REYES: Rodriguez is Jack Bauer "the exploits of Jose Rodriguez are documented in the series “24.”

Jose Rodriguez is Jack Bauer
Dec 09, 2007 - http://majikthise.typepad.com/majikthise_/2007/12/jose-rodriguez.html

The Chair of the House Intelligence Committee favorably compared the former head of the National Clandestine Service to the fictional torturer Jack Bauer at a CIA awards ceremony last August. ... Rep. Sylvestre Reyes (D-TX) gave Jose Rodriguez, Jr. a flag and called him an American hero.

.... On Tuesday, 16 August 2007, during the 4th annual "Border Security Conference" in El Paso, Texas, Congressman Silvestre Reyes ....

CHAIRMAN REYES: Thank you very much, General. Before I bring up to the podium a very special guest who is going to wrap up our conference – and I consider him a personal friend, although we’ve been working together a very short six months, but I feel like I’ve really got an opportunity to know, Director Mike McConnell – I thought it would be appropriate to honor an individual. And when we honor this individual, we normally don’t get an opportunity to thank the people that worked so hard on behalf of our national security. By the very nature of their job, they have to stay in the shadows; no one ever knows who they are and nobody ever gets an opportunity to thank them.

We have an individual here that Mike Delaney tells me was the impetus to – I hope all of you are familiar with the TV series “24.” This gentleman that I’m about to thank was really the genesis – with a few liberties that Hollywood takes – the exploits of Jose Rodriguez are documented in the series “24.” .... I consider him an American hero .....

10. MotherF3cker. So BOTH Reyes and Hoekstra are dirty?
And THESE are the guys that are going to "investigate" the CIA tape destruction?

Can someone please show me how I'm wrong?

11. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights!! You have to prove your accusation FIRST!
You don't get to convict with a cleverly worded question, sorry! And Rush Limbaugh isn't in my trusted witness column.

Add to that, that Congress was lied to by the Junta...... we have to place everything into that context, sadly.
The good news, thanks to the efforts of DUers and many activists and Dem oversight, noone, and I mean NOONE, believes the junta any more.

12. I'm trying to drill down to something else, and that has nothing to do
with accusing Nancy et al.

I'm trying to figure out if the two main players on the investigating committee are dirty or not.

Reyes has been accused of ties to Rodriguez. The ranking member hawked WMD for BushCo.

Just trying to tease out the facts. I have no stake in tarring anyone.
