AP: Home Movie Shows JFK Seconds Before Death

DALLAS (Feb. 19) - A recently discovered home movie shows a brief but clear glimpse of President Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy just seconds before his assassination.

The silent, 8 mm color film is "the clearest, best film of Jackie in the motorcade," said Gary Mack, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum, which focuses on Kennedy's life and assassination. The film was unveiled Monday on the museum's Web site.

The film shows a clear glimpse of President Kennedy and the first lady a few blocks from Dealey Plaza and roughly 90 seconds before the killing. Also visible is Secret Service agent Clint Hill riding on the back of the car.

The assassination is not shown in the 40-second clip.

1. I also heard on the Dallas news tonight
That they have had the film for a year "cleaning it up".

3. The film I saw on TV was colorized
which I can't imagine why doing that would have been important to the historical value...

4. Agree. I'm just curious as to what exactly they "cleaned up"
Since this movie is forty-three years old, the color was probably washed out. The film stock itself may have begun to deteriorate.

5. The way I understood it
It started out black and white.

6. Really? Wonder who and why the decision was made to colorize it?
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 11:32 PM by Penndems
What is really mind-boggling is why Mr. Jefferies has held onto it since 1963. His name could've ranked up there with Abraham Zapruder's in the history books.

7. I think the subject came up in casual conversation with his son
I have to admit I was only half-paying attention.

8. According to the story
The film was shot in color, it was also taken 4 blocks away from the shooting so I don't think anything new will come of it.

10. Welcome to DU, ben_meyers!
:hi:

You know, looking at that clip, it doesn't seem as if forty-three years has elapsed since President Kennedy's assassination.

9. The article says it was color film
As I remember, all our home movies were in color, and that was the 60's and we were lower middle class. The guy who took the film was a photographer, so I doubt he would have been out of date using black and white for a home movie.
