Republican calls for monitoring of ALL email and IM's
A bill introduced to the US House of Representatives would require ISPs to record all users' surfing activity, IM conversations and email traffic indefinitely.

The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by sponsor Lamar Smith, a republican congressman from Texas, would impose fines and a prison term of one year on ISPs which failed to keep full records.

"A crime is still a crime, whether it occurs on the street or on the internet," said Congressman Smith.

"In this age of increasing digital and technological sophistication, cyber-crimes and cyber-terrorism pose a serious threat to the US. Law enforcement and the private sector must be prepared to deal with these crimes."

1. LOL
Just like a Republican. First a major invasion of privacy where all citizens are treated like criminals, but also an unfunded mandate where ISP's have to pay for storage (even tape) to record all of this.

6. Yep
They fear change and difference and must control it to insure uniformity with them of course on top.

2. Sounds great, considering we already monitor where everyone physically goes.
Why not monitor where they digitally go as well? Wait, aren't they already doing that?

8. they should start with their own emails and see how many criminals
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 12:05 AM by Sydnie
they catch that way. I can think of several that they would have nabbed off the top of my head. I think they should get on to more important things, rather than have all emails monitored for that "stolen $1,000 Chocolate Chip Cookie" recipe that was like Charlie on the MBTA so many years now. Only, unlike Charlie, it always seems to return, doesn't it?

10. I'm totally fine with this
provided that the Government makes all government surfing activity, IM conversations and email traffic of every representative, senator, administrative staff, the president and all underlings of the US recorded indefinitely and freely available to the People instantly as well. If they've done nothing wrong, they've got nothing to worry about, right?

I wonder how many lawsuits can come about from e-leaks of sensitive business material passed to a buddy in similar competitive business from someone who has access to all that info in government or law enforcement/investigation? Perhaps litigation is the next cash cow.

11. Hey, Mr. Smith!
Let me save you the trouble of tracking down where I go on the internet, and what I have to say.

I go to the sites that will give me the truth about you and your cohorts -- you know, those websites that list all of the Republicans who are now in jail for bribe-taking, corruption, child porn, patronizing prostitution, et cetera.

I frequent websites that discuss the details of how this president and his administration have broken the law and ignored the Constitution; secret prisons, rendition, imprisonment without access to due process -- all of that crap that you and your party members rubber-stamped without a whit of the oversight that is your responsibility -- remember, the responsibility you SWORE to uphold on the Bible? Yeah, THAT responsibility.

If you're wondering what I think of you and your president, look no further. I think you're a bunch of hypocritical theives, wrapping yourselves in the flag and psuedo Christianity while you lie, torture, steal, and line your pockets with taxpayers' money.

You want a look-see into people's email -- good! Let's start with the White House email system, shall we? Let's see what Scooter told Cheney, what Cheney told Gonzales, what Gonzales told Bush, and what Bush told everyone -- dyin' to know what all of THAT reveals, aren't you?

Good God, you'd think that you people -- even obvious idiots like yourself -- would have learned the "Foley Lesson": don't open a can of worms when you know DAMNED WELL those nasty little suckers are all going to come home to haunt not the OTHER GUY, but YOU!

Jesus, some people are just too stupid ...
